Description

We are looking for a Consultant in Anaesthesia with special interest in Obstetric anaesthesia to join our friendly and dynamic department.

The Department of Anaesthesia is part of the Directorate of Surgery, Anaesthesia and Critical Care and provides services throughout the Trust.

Our department consists of 37 Consultants, 21 Speciality grade doctors, and approximately 15 Trainees. We have recently relocated to a newly purpose-built anaesthetic department with multiple rooms dedicated for administrative work and teaching.

The centre for elective surgery is at St Albans City Hospital where there are 6 operating theatres catering for General Surgery, Breast, Orthopaedics, Ophthalmology, ENT, Urology, Gynaecology, Chronic pain.

There is a busy Day Surgery unit and two wards for elective cases.

The hospital has one of the longest established Preoperative Assessment Units anywhere and this is the key to the efficient running of theatres.

Cardiopulmonary exercise testing is undertaken in conjunction with the department of respiratory medicine.

The maternity unit covers approximately 5000 deliveries annually, and a 24-hour epidural service with two dedicated maternity theatres.

Two obstetric anaesthetic consultants are allocated to cover the labour ward and elective Caesarean sections during weekdays, in addition trainees or specialty doctors hold bleeps.

We provide weekly Anaesthetic clinics with two obstetric Anaesthesia Consultants to see high risk cases and women receiving elective Caesarean sections.

Our obstetric observation bay focuses on high risk and complex cases, supported by critical care outreach team. Teaching and training are integral to our service with trainees at different stage of their modules. We hold regular high risk obstetric MDT meetings, journal club meetings and monthly Obstetric Anaesthesia Dashboard presentations. We are PROMPT compliant.

Watford General Hospital is the acute site for the Trust. We currently have 8 operating theatres and a 20-bed combined Critical Care unit.

There is a 24-hour emergency operating service with onsite Anaesthetic consultant 8am-9pm Monday to Friday and 8am-6pm Saturday and Sunday.

We provide anaesthesia for Complex orthopaedic surgery, gynae-oncological surgery, Colorectal cancer surgery, Urology, ENT, Maxillofacial surgery, and vascular surgery. We provide anaesthetic services for Cardiology (Cathlab), Gastroenterology (procedural sedation) and Radiology (CT scan or interventions). The Trust has recently obtained two robots for robotic surgery.

There has never been a more exciting time to join West Hertfordshire Hospitals NHS Trust Major redevelopment works are due for completion by 2025 or soon after.

These will be most dramatic at Watford General Hospital where up to 90% of buildings will be new.

We encourage and welcome people with disabilities if you need help please ask.

In Addition to covering the obstetric Unit and general lists, the New Consultant will participate in a one in twelve rota for General Consultant on-calls covering Theatres, Obstetric Unit and paediatric emergencies out of hours.

They will be supervising three out of five on-call trainees. There is a separate ICU consultant on call. We have regular Trauma and CEPOD lists on weekdays and weekends. This reduces the workload for the on-call consultant on weekends. The weekday on-call starts at 8pm. There are plenty of teaching opportunities at the Simulation centre.

A new IR suit is being built on Watford site and the new job plans may include some sedation lists.

There is a plan to redevelop the SACH site to increase the throughput of elective cases.
