Bluebird, one of the most successful non-fiction imprints in publishing, is searching for a dynamic, talented and creative publicist with exceptional author care skills to help lead the team and handle some existing commissions and add to our programme.

This Acting Senior Commissioning Editor role is a fixed term contract for 12 months to cover for maternity leave.


Bluebird & One Boat publish across a number of interest areas including food and drink, parenting, activism, feminism, mental health, the environment, health and fitness, memoir and more.

Our books and authors may be varied, but they all have empathy at their heart.

You'll be joining a close-knit, highly supportive team that values initiative, creative thinking and the desire to reach outside of the usual publishing spaces to find audiences and new readers.


We are looking for someone who has the ability to asses proposals for viability, identify and acquire authors with substantial pre-existing platforms and who can galvanise the team to deliver through publications.

He/she/they should have a strategic mindset and a strong network of contacts across the agenting community and in the international markets.

We are looking for a team player to join a friendly, collaborative, close-knit team.


Key tasks of the role include -

  • Manage the books of the editor going on leave through to publication and beyond
  • Acquire new commissions (from agents, direct approaches, US and foreign houses)
  • Share the editorial load in house (reading and assessing projects, pitching in on project management as needed).
  • Two plus years at Assistant Editor level or more senior; ideally work as an Editor or Senior Editor.
  • Eye for detail and excellent grasp of editorial skills (from structural editing through to copyediting and proofreading)
  • A keen interest in Non-Fiction publishing, particularly in the sphere of selfhelp, health (primarily blackandwhite)
  • A friendly, flexible approach open to collaboration
  • A keen, strategic approach to commissioning

We'd love it if you have (desirable skills and experience) -

  • Any relevant systems experience (Biblio, Bookscan, Concur).
  • Previous commissioning experience and familiarity with contracts and negotiation

Salary starting from:
£35,000 onwards

This is a full time, fixed-term role for 12 months, and will be based in our offices in Farringdon, London, with some flexibility to work from home each week.
