Dental Health Support Worker

Band 2m(Working 30 Hours per week x 38 weeks per annum)


We are seeking to appoint an enthusiastic, self-motivated Dental Health Support Worker to assist the Oral Health Promoter/ Oral Health Improvement Practitioner (OHP/OHIP) in implementing and monitoring Oral Health Promotion programmes.

The job will include visiting participating schools as well as other sites at various locations.

We are seeking to appoint to our Blaenau Ffestiniog base.


The ability to travel between sites in a timely manner is essential and will require both the use of health board and other vehicles to travel between sites and transport stock and items.

The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; Welsh and/or English speakers are equally welcome to apply.

  • To support and assist the Oral Health Educator (OHE) in implementing and monitoring Oral Health Promotion programme in a variety of locations dependent upon the assigned oral health programme, such as Designed to Smile, or, Older Persons programmes; this will include attending schools, or, other community settings such as care homes.
  • To communicate with patients to gain consent for Oral Health programmes
  • To order and monitor the use of Oral Health Promotion resources, under the guidance of the OHE
  • To work as a member of the Oral Health Improvement team conducting delegated tasks related to Oral Health Promotion activities and adopting a community development approach
  • To assist the OHE staff in the development of departmental resources to support the delivery of the Oral Health Promotion programme
  • Assist the OHEs with administrative and basic computer tasks.

To provide basic oral health messages and promote positive oral health behaviours to clients/ carers after appropriate training, and within the limits of their own competence.


To develop and maintain good working relationships and communication with all stakeholders including families, health professionals, OHEs, dental teams and educational and childcare establishments.

To motivate, guide and encourage clients to comply and engage in established Oral Health Promotion activities and programmes.

To make contact and liaise with designated settings (eg. schools and nurseries, or care homes) to establish links to enable the delivery of the Oral Health Improvement programme.

To communicate with clients to gain consent for Oral Health promotion activities.


To work closely with, and take direction from, the OHE to deliver and monitor the Oral Health Promotion activities within the designated Oral Health Improvement Programme.


To be involved in Health Promotion initiatives such as promotional events, study days and patient related activities, under the direction of the supervising OHE.


Dependent upon the assigned oral health promotion programme, to facilitate and supervise tooth brushing programmes within designated schools and nursery settings and/or other settings that may be specified by the OHE.

To monitor the tooth brushing programme, ensuring that all quality assurance measures are maintained

To report any concerns immediately to the OHE.


To support the OHE staff with administrative duties including all associated paperwork, forms and data collection necessary to support the assigned oral health promotion programme.


To be responsible for collecting, ordering and monitoring stock levels and be accountable for security of stock in remote storage areas.

To undertake ordering and receipting when required, via the 'Oracle' system.

To attend staff meetings, clinical governance activities and updates as and when required.

To participate in the ongoing evaluation and monitoring of the assigned oral health promotion programme contributing to service development.

To manage and prioritise daily workload and time effectively.

To participate in and support any other CDS oral health programmes as may come on stream.
