Some details about the role.


Being a Caretaker will require strong people skills; you will need to be able to work within a team and communicate with a wide range of customers.


The role will involve undertaking all aspects of caretaking, safety, security and cleaning at the Council's public halls and buildings in Kendal.

It will involve the preparation of rooms for a wide variety of events in accordance with procedures and the requirements of the Delivery and Commercial Officer, hirers and users of the premises.

The nature of this work can be physically intensive and demanding.


Please note, this role is part-time (15 hours per week) working to a variable rota where weekend and evening work will be expected.


What we are looking for in you

  • Be able to undertake the cleaning and preparation of rooms and toilets in accordance with procedures and the requirements of the Delivery and Commercial Officer.
  • Have a basic knowledge of the halls technical equipment.
  • Be able to advise casual staff of the work they need to undertake.
  • Liaise with the Delivery and Commercial Officer on a regular basis regarding all events at the Town Hall.
  • To maintain stock control of cleaning and refreshment supplies.
  • Arrange for banners to be erected across Highgate and any other decorations to be in place as required.
  • Ensure that the Halls are left in a secure manner at all times.
  • Ensure that all staff whether special event, casual or permanent are appraised of all security and safety measures relating to the safe running of the premises when the public are present.
  • Be able to use and train casual and other event staff in the safe use of, the Evacuation chair.
  • Ensure that all casual caretaking staff and Town Hall hirers are adequately trained to show special event staff how to evacuate members of the public in an emergency.
  • Report any accidents or any other irregular events in line with procedures.
  • Carry out weekly fire alarm testing in Kendal Town Hall and South Lakeland House and to accurately record results.
  • Carry out monthly fire exit door checks in Kendal Town Hall.
  • Prepare and distribute refreshments for internal and external hirers.
  • Instruct external hirers in the safe use of the kitchen and kitchen appliances as required.
  • Be responsible for the opening and closing of Kendal Town Hall including the setting/unsetting of security alarms.

In addition you will:


  • Have a good level of education (C grade GCSE or equivalent in English and Mathematics) or demonstrable experience based on current workbased competency.
  • Demonstrable experience of working with the public in a similar type role.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with other members of the team and the public.
  • Proven ability to work with a minimum of supervision.
  • Ability and willingness to undertake relevant training, including 'First Aid'.
  • Be required to work evenings and weekends.
  • Experience in supervisory duties and responsibilities.
  • Experience of light maintenance work and DIY.
