We have a fantastic opportunity for an Highways Sector Environment & Sustainability Lead to join our Transport Infrastructure HSEQ Team, working across our Highway projects in the UK.

This is a full time, permanent opportunity that offers hybrid working.


The Highways Sector Environment & Sustainability Lead plays an important role with the power to influence and will be responsible for setting agendas and developing and implementing strategic solutions and initiatives, to ensure we meet the Amey Group and key client environment and sustainability goals.


The standard hours of work are 37.5 hours, Monday - Friday.

You will be responsible for:


  • Embodying a collaborative approach, working with environment, carbon and sustainability professionals across Amey and others (including Clients, our key partners and Supply Chain members) to deliver: Zero Carbon Solutions, Nature Based Solutions and Compliant, Resilient & Industry Best Practice Solutions across our value chain, helping reduce the environmental impact of our construction, operation and maintenance activities
  • Being the ultimate 'go to' person for our highways operations for understanding, knowledge, technical compliance and competence matters, providing the environmental discipline focal point, ensuring that we meet all external commitments and obligations and being recognised as such both inside and outside of Amey.
  • Working with other Health, Safety, Environment and Quality professionals and Technical Leads to provide assurance to operate within the highways domain:
  • reviewing and briefing changes in law and standards
- ensuring environmental and social issues are identified and factored into the decision-making processes; developing, reviewing and revising appropriate policies and procedures.
- determining competence requirements and resource plans in line with obligations for specialist environmental advice
- monitoring technical compliance
- undertaking technical audits (internal and external)
- reviewing and reporting on technical performance

  • Working with Operational Leaders and their teams to
- maintain ISO 14001 certification of our integrated management systems
- achieve PAS 2080 Carbon Management in buildings and infrastructure verification (Asset Manager, Constructor, Product/ Material Supplier) as appropriate for our highways activities

  • Active participation in industry associations and groups, and peer discussion of discipline concerns or crossdiscipline issues
  • Championing best practice and innovation to deliver operational excellence.
  • Environmental performance monitoring, analysis and evaluation, writing reports and making recommendations to our business leaders to drive continual improvement
  • Provide Work Winning support.
  • Lead on environment and sustainability professional succession, training and development
  • Lead on strategic solutions and initiatives

What makes this role unique is that you will be an ambassador and advocate for positive change for a leading public service provider, delivering highways infrastructure projects across the UK, within a business of circa 11,000 employees, with annual revenues of circa £1.5 - £2bn, with the purpose of delivering sustainable infrastructure solutions, enhancing life and protecting our shared future. You will play a key role in transforming the carbon and climate change ambitions of key clients into real actions.


We want to hear from you if you have:

  • A strong record of achievement and experience of playing a key role within organisations.
  • Strong understanding of environmental management principles, environmental impact assessment and environmental impact reduction strategies.
  • Experience of delivering initiatives to deliver circular economy outcomes, reduce carbon emissions and deliver biodiversity net gain.
  • Excellent project management skills, including the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and work effectively under tight deadlines.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Extensive experience of working in Environmental management and sustainability

Technical Competencies:


  • Must have knowledge, understanding and experience with ISO 14001 Environmental Management Systems and environmental requirements set out in legislation and Highways Standards (e.g. DMRB) applicable to construction, maintenance and operation activities in the highways environment.
  • Bachelor's degree or master's in relevant field such as Environment, sustainability or engineering
  • Chartered Environmentalist (CENV)
  • Managerial (Full) Membership of IEMA or equivalent membe
