Lancashire County Council's Trading Standards Service is looking to recruit a Metrology Technical Support Officer with a focus on physically testing items using specialised equipment in a laboratory setting at our Cuerden Mill depot in Lancashire.

The role is to provide general and specific technical support within the Trading Standards Metrology Team, oversee and coordinate the day-to-day calibration services, and undertake other technical support.


The Trading Standards Service is responsible for the enforcement of legal metrology (weights and measures) duties using specialised testing equipment to ascertain business compliance.

The metrology work is undertaken by a specialised team within Trading Standards, from a purpose-built calibration centre as well as during inspections at business premises.

The testing equipment used during compliance inspections by the Service is predominantly maintained and calibrated in-house.

The equipment used for legal purposes must meet traceability specifications to national standards and this is the primary function of the calibration centre.

Additionally, the Service provides services to industry, utilising calibration capacity in the legal metrology support facilities.

You will be able to demonstrate excellent skills relating to this technician role including:

  • High level competence with spreadsheet and word processing packages
  • Ability to interpret measurement results to assure required specifications have been met against defined criteria
  • Ability to safely handle high value, precision artefacts ranging in mass from 1mg to 20kg
  • Working as a member of a team
With previous experience in an accredited calibration or testing laboratory in a technical and/or supervisory role and familiarity with/understanding of quality management system requirements, particularly ISO17025 and ISO9001, and sound knowledge of advanced principles of measurement you will be confident in:

  • Using specialised equipment
  • Acting as a source of technical reference to colleagues
  • Carrying out contract reviews
  • Recording, storing and analysing statistical data held in electronic format
  • Reporting anomalies and investigating nonconforming work
  • Working alone for long periods, sometimes undertaking moderately physical activity
  • Processing orders, obtaining specifications and requirements as practised in a customerfacing role
