Description

Working under the direct supervision of a member of the nursing team and strictly in accordance with specific service guidelines, patient specific directions and protocols, the Phlebotomist will support the nursing team in the delivery of nursing services.

As part of the multidisciplinary team, the Phlebotomist will deliver care within their scope of the service to the entitled patient population.

The Phlebotomist will be required to provide excellent service delivery to patients across clinic environments and patients' own homes.

The core hours for this role are currently Monday-Friday from 8am-8pm. This might change according to business needs with possibility of weekend shifts.

  • To obtain venous blood samples from patients, as required by clinicians for laboratory investigations in clinic environments and patients' own homes.
  • To work within a team, meeting the needs of the service defined client group.
  • To check, rotate and order supplies within the service.
  • To obtain venous blood samples from patients in a safe and professional manner and to follow agreed protocols and techniques of blood collection.
  • To thoroughly check each patient's details to identify them correctly.
  • Working alone in a clinical environment and patients' homes.
  • To communicate with the patients and carers, whilst explaining the task being performed.
  • Undertake appropriate training to ensure practice is maintained and updated. Practice and promote approved and up to date methods and techniques relating to blood collection.
  • Accurate, legible labelling of all samples to confirm patient identity to ensure that the specimen containers are consistent with that of the request forms and ensuring specimens are stored appropriately for collection.
  • To address and work with all patients in a professional and supportive manner in compliance with NCGPA policy on patient care and to support the individual's privacy and dignity at all times.
  • Ensure that blood samples taken after transport collection reach the appropriate laboratory in time.
  • To maintain clinical activity records pertaining to the service, according to required standards.
