Employees of the Trust are expected to maintain a safe working environment and observe obligations under organisational and departmental Health & Safety Policies, maintaining awareness of safe practices and assessment of risk.

The operative policies at any time are available on the Trust Intranet. The Trust is committed to providing safe and effective care for patients. To ensure this, there is an agreed procedure for medical staff that enables them to report, quickly and confidentially, concerns

The post holder will be expected to provide comprehensive peri-operative clinical care to our patients while on DCC duties. A typical DCC day starts at 0800 and finishes at 1800 hours.

There is an on-call commitment included in 2 out of 3 job plans and the appointees will be expected to participate in a 1 in 15 rota with prospective cover and 1 in 8 weekend trauma session.

Job 3 is for someone with obstetrics subspecialty
interest.

While on call, the Specialist Grade will be expected to support juniors managing general emergencies as well as obstetric emergencies.

Specialist doctors will also be expected to support junior colleagues in paediatric resuscitation should children require airway management in an emergency.

The Department has one on resident Speciality Doctor/Trust Registrar covering labour ward.

Another Speciality Doctor/Trust Registrar will be covering paediatric resuscitation and fascia iliac block service in addition covering emergency operating theatre between 1800:00-08:00.

The Division operates a policy of only life or limb threatening cases after 22:00 hours.

The Specialist Grade on-call will be present onsite to support jumior colleagues in such circumstances when emergency theatre is busy after hours.


North Middlesex University Hospital NHS Trust is a medium sized District General Hospital based in Edmonton in Enfield, North London.

We serve a diverse multicultural population largely from the London boroughs of Enfield and Haringey.

Many of our patients live in wards that are within the 5% most deprived in the UK and a large proportion of our patients were born abroad.

This makes it both a fascinating and a challenging hospital to work in.

Over the last decade we have rebuilt almost all of the hospital and now have facilities that we are proud to work in.

We employ over 3,500 staff, more than half of whom live locally. We encourage apprenticeships from the local community and work closely with our local Health Watch.

We are primarily an emergency led hospital with more than 90% of our bed days being used for patients admitted via our emergency and ambulatory units.

As well as offering everything you would expect from a major acute hospital we have a number of tertiary services treating patients with HIV
and Sickle Cell Disease and a large cancer and radiotherapy service. We also run our local community Sexual Health Clinics.
We are proud of our staff and want to ensure their training allows them to provide excellent clinical care. We are also a training unit for medical students from UCL and St George's University Grenada,
and for nursing and midwifery students from Middlesex and City Universities.

The post holder should be prepared to perform any other reasonable duties in occasional emergencies and unforeseen circumstances.

Commitments arising in such circumstances are, however, exceptional and the post holder will not be required to undertake work of this kind for prolonged periods or on a regular basis.

All efforts will be made to ensure that work of this kind does not result in
continuous hours of duty which will be in breach of European Working Time Directive.


The appointee is also expected to:

  • Actively participate in the department teaching programme
  • Actively participate in audit
  • Pursue continuing medical education to the Royal College and GMC
guidelines and engage in the Trust appraisal process which would contribute towards revalidation.

  • Teach and train the junior anaesthetists, medical students, nurses and
paramedics. This involves obtaining training and accreditation to be clinical andeducational supervisors.


There is a robust appraisal process conducted by the Trust and the appointee will be able to take advantage of this on annual basis which would help towards revalidation.
