We are seeking to recruit an Infrastructure Inspector who will respond to a high volume of wide-ranging enquiries regarding issues which could impact the operation of bus services on our highways and the travelling public.


About Us


The Local Bus Team liaise with agencies including Highways colleagues, utility companies, Surrey bus operators and TfL regarding works on our Highway.

We are responsible for ensuring the best alternative diversion routes are chosen when roads are closed and effectively communicating these closures to minimise any inconvenience to the travelling public and our bus operators.


Putting buses at the heart of our new and emerging Surrey Transport Plan, the delivery of which is key to our Greener Futures Programme, is key to providing a realistic and attractive alternative to the private car.

This will help us
reduce the 46% of carbon emissions that come from the transport sector in the county, forming part of our pathway to net zero carbon.

Bus Services provide access to key services for our residents, including access to employment, education, health, and essential shopping.

Our contracted bus services support those provided commercially which means a keen understanding of bus network operations and a proven ability to work in partnership is vital to maximise positive outcomes for the council and residents.

As part of this, you will assist with the growth of the existing positive partnership ethos with our local bus operators, ensuring that bus services are supported.


About the Role


We are looking for an enthusiastic and proactive team player with excellent organisational skills and the ability to deal with conflicting priorities to tight deadlines.


You will need to work and travel across the County so
a full driving licence is essential as a van will be provided for this role together with a laptop and mobile phone.

This is a mobile outdoor position, working largely unsupervised on a day-to-day basis, along with our two existing Transport Officer (Infrastructure).

A suitably equipped van will be supplied by the Council to be used for work purposes, which will be kept at your home.

The working week is spent in the field, in various weathers with office visits once a week or as required to collect material to post at the roadside.


The work requires a degree of fitness, and training will be arranged for working with ladders and awareness of safety requirements for working on the Highway.

This position requires a high degree of self-motivation and organisation, but also working as directed by office-based Transport Officers.


This role will be supporting the Team in proactively advising the travelling public of road closures and bus stop suspensions that could affect their journey.

We also have a requirement to spend time monitoring bus services which are financially supported by the Council and report any irregularities.

Ensuring the best impression is given to the public is essential, therefore this post also manages the cleaning and repairs of bus stop timetable cases and flags.


Surrey County Council embraces
Agile Working, which means that colleagues can work with their managers to agree an appropriate balance of when they work to suit the needs of the team, while giving individuals flexibility.

For operational reasons this post is required to operate a regular 7am to 3pm, 5 days a week, although some flexibility can be given.


Your responsibilities as a Transport Officer will include:

  • Undertaking the posting of information notices and timetables at bus stops
  • Liaising with Highways colleagues on closure periods
  • Liaising with bus operators, utility companies and colleagues on diversion routes
  • Speaking to the general public when out and about
  • Liaising with Transport Officers on road closures /bus stop suspensions as required
  • Supporting the Team Manager in ensuring that all the Council's and statutory obligations are met
  • Support on our work to increase bus patronage through providing information to passengers
  • To resolve daytoday issues concerning bus service provision
  • Geographical knowledge of the county and experience in the field of bus service operational matters
  • Full, clean driving licence
  • Ability to prioritise and plan own workload in the context of conflicting priorities to meet deadlines and work on own initiative
  • Excellent verbal communication skills and confidence in building a rapport with a wide range of stakeholders
  • Experience in dealing with customer enquiries and responding to complaints
  • Skilled at both independent and team working
  • Ability to learn quickly and hit the ground runn
