Job description:

Are you a passionate leader in Equality Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) who is inspired to ensure all individuals can achieve their personal ambitions and thrive in the workplace? We have two exciting opportunities to join Defra in the following roles:

  • Organisational Compliance lead (EDI)
  • Transformation and Operations Lead (EDI)


Both roles will work within a team of EDI experts within Group Corporate Services (HR), working in partnership with the Talent, Leadership and Learning and Development centres of expertise to ensure Defra group achieves its diversity and inclusion objectives and improves our capacity to attract, develop, progress and support employees from all backgrounds to thrive.


You will be a passionate and experienced Equality and Diversity and Inclusion professional, and a credible leader who is able to navigate complex multi organisational environments and influence senior leaders to ensure compliance at a strategic level.

You will be a key Subject Matter Expert (SME) Point of Contact for our EDI boards, providing guidance and assurance, supporting our networks and executive champions to drive progress and enhance the delivery of our organisational EDI activities.


Using your collaboration skills, you will also act as an expert advisor and enabling partner providing critical expertise to our Arm's Length Body (ALB) organisations and their leadership teams, to ensure they can meet their equality goals and connect into the wider EDI group activities.


Working with the Head of EDI and Deputy Director of Inclusion, you will ensure organisational compliance with all legislative duties within the Equality Act 2010 and Public Sector Equality Duty.

You will proactively horizon scan for upcoming legislative and policy changes, ensuring all group organisations are prepared and able to implement relevant changes as required, working in partnership with senior leadership teams and HR Expert Services teams.

Organisational Compliance Lead (EDI)

  • Planning, organising, and tracking a wide range of activities and events across our organisations to ensure all areas of appropriate legislation are applied as required in all areas of business led equality delivery
  • You will partner with our People Analytics team to ensure robust EDI data analysis and reporting in line with obligations under the Public Sector Equality Duty
  • You will support and enable the maturation of a Community of Practice for completion of Equality Impact assessments
  • You will support and enable the business equality objectives within our Defra Group organisations, with particular focus on Natural England in partnership with HRBP's and wider expert services teams
  • You will coordinate and oversee delivery of organisational Pay Gap reporting across our group organisations to include ethnicity pay gap reporting
Transformation and Operations Lead (EDI)

  • You will lead the preparation and organisation of our quarterly EDI programme board, reporting to our Executive EDI champions on progress of delivery
  • Working with the Head of EDI, you will ensure that EDI activities within Defra group align with the requirements of, and contribute to the realisation of the Civil Service Diversity and Inclusion Strategy
  • You will be a key partner for our civil service ALB agencies (Rural Payments Agency, Veterinary Medicines Agency and Animal Plant and Health Agency)
  • You will be a key partner for Environment Agency in partnership with our HR Business Partner and wider expert services teams
  • Working with our communications lead, you will oversee delivery of a comprehensive annual engagement plan
