If so, we're looking for you to join us as our next Independent Technical Assessor working in our Safety & Regulation Directorate business unit


The Opportunity


Working as our next Independent Technical Assessor, you'll be working as part of the Internal Nuclear Regulation function within the Safety and Regulation Directorate on the Hinkley Point C (HPC) project.

In this role, you'll be ensuring that the project adheres to the highest standards of safety, security, and quality.

Our mission is to provide independent challenge and assurance to the HPC project, pushing the organisation and its supply chain to exceed compliance and strive for best practices.

This role will be based working at both our Aztec West and Gloucester Business Park offices 2-3 days a week minimum and the other days working from home.

What you'll be doing


In this role, you'll dive into the intricacies of safety cases and associated engineering substantiation, contributing to the overarching "barrier model" that safeguards our projects.

Your daily responsibilities involve conducting thorough technical reviews to ensure compliance and bolster our assurance that robust processes are in place for the production and review of safety cases and supporting documentation.


Other roles and responsibilities also include:

  • Dive deep into the safety case documentation and design deliverables, focusing particularly on those linked to safety case (e.g., PCmSR), significant plant modifications, and key construction and commissioning milestones.
  • Offer an independent perspective on technical and safety matters to the Nuclear Safety Committee, internal stakeholders, and external regulators.
  • Ensure oversight of the Intelligent Customer and Responsible Designer processes, ensuring these organisations conduct adequate internal checks and provide assurance on design and safety case deliverables.
  • Synthesise assessment outputs to offer a comprehensive view of the effectiveness of design and safety case processes, escalating any issues as needed.
  • Stand in for the ITA Manager at crucial decisionmaking committees and forums, ensuring representation and alignment.
  • Provide oversight to resolve significant emergent issues, ensuring prompt and effective resolution.

Who you are


We're looking for you to hold a degree in a relevant science or engineering field, with a preference for Mechanical Engineering, and ideally possess Chartered Engineer status.

Extensive experience in either working for or supporting a UK licensee is essential.

You must demonstrate comprehensive expertise in designing or assessing mechanical equipment, including pumps, vessels, heat exchangers, valves, pipework, cranes, fuel handling equipment, and HVAC systems.


Additionally, you should have a strong background in evaluating the structural integrity of primary circuit components and possess knowledge of materials, material testing, welding, and non-destructive testing.


Other requirements for this position include:

  • Possess a strong understanding of quality arrangements necessary in the UK nuclear regulated environment, coupled with extensive experience in conducting assessments and collaborating with engineering functions to uphold and enhance quality standards.
  • Exhibit flexibility and a readiness to undertake unfamiliar tasks.
  • Demonstrate the ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
  • Maintain a questioning attitude to ensure thoroughness and effectiveness in problemsolving.
