Job summary:

Overview of the role


This is an exciting opportunity to perform a pivotal role within the Strategic Road Network (SRN) Division within Welsh Government.


The division is responsible for the planning, operation, maintenance and improvement of the motorway and trunk road network in Wales on behalf of Welsh Ministers.

One of Wales' most important infrastructure assets with a value of over £18.0bn, it is essential for supporting the Welsh Government's vision for a sustainable and prosperous Wales.


The Division is a friendly and supportive place to work with team members focused on working together to do a good job.


The role is integral to the operation of the Strategic Road Network, providing support to the engineers across the Division to respond to items of correspondence received from various sources.


Correspondence can be received from members of the public, Local Authorities, Councils / Councillors direct to the Welsh Government's First Point of Contact Centre, Traffic Wales, via its Trunk Road Agents, Welsh Government engineers and directly to the specified mailbox.


The role provides the opportunity to engage with a variety of stakeholders and it will also provide a unique insight into the customers' perceptions of the trunk road network.

You will develop an understanding of how the trunk road network is maintained and operated with potential exposure to the Transport and Digital Connectivity Directorate more generally as the correspondence role expands.

The role will include personally drafting material related to a range of topics across a busy and complex Division.

You will need to manage the competing pressures and deadlines to ensure that work is delivered in a timely manner, to the highest quality.


The role is also responsible for the collation of performance statistics to monitor the effectiveness of the team, including the number of items of correspondence, response rates and performance rates (meeting deadlines).

Person specification:

Key Tasks

  • Preparation of responses to items of correspondence.
  • Adherence to governance requirements in terms of obtaining clearance for a response and keeping an accurate record of information.
  • Drafting the highest quality, uptodate responses which will require strong working relationships across the Division and the Welsh Government Trunk Road Agents to keep abreast of current issues.
  • Administrative duties including the recording of all transport related correspondence and the production of weekly stats to ensure work is completed with the permitted timescales.
