This is an exciting opportunity to lead on psychological and therapeutic provision in perinatal mental health and parent-infant work. We are looking to recruit enthusiastic and knowledgeable people to join our specialist Perinatal Mental Health Service. Our team is county wide operating out of two hubs. We work closely with our community partners in midwifery, obstetrics, social work, safeguarding and health visiting.

A part-time substantive Principal Clinical/Counselling Psychologist post, for the south hub, based in Cambridge, is being advertised.


This post-holder will join a therapy team made up of psychologists, a psychotherapist and family therapists, who deliver assessments, a range of therapeutic interventions and groups, alongside the multidisciplinary team.


The post-holder will provide psychological and perinatal expertise to the team and community partners, as well as providing clinical leadership and supporting service development.


The Clinical/Counselling Psychologist will contribute to the provision of a high-quality specialist perinatal psychology service to clients of the Perinatal Mental Health Service.


The post-holder will conduct psychological assessments and provide therapy, drawing on a range of models, to women and their families.

This will include individual, group and dyadic work between parent and infant.

They will also supervise, and support work provided by other clinical members of the team, as well as providing training and consultation to the wider pathway.

You will be responsible for managing, developing and overseeing the clinical offer from the team as a whole, forming part of the senior leadership team and supervising psychology colleagues.


The post-holder will work autonomously within professional guidelines and exercise responsibility for the systematic governance of the psychological practice within the Perinatal Mental Health Service.

  • Working with mothers, babies and other family members and other team members to provide specialist psychological assessments based on appropriate use, interpretation, and integration of highly complex psychological data from a variety of sources including psychological and neuropsychological test, self-report measures, rating scales, direct and indirect structured observations and semi-structured interviews with clients, family members and others involved in the client's care.
  • To develop psychological formulations of presenting problems or situations that integrate information from assessments within a coherent framework that draws upon psychological theory and evidence, and which incorporates interpersonal, societal, cultural, and biological factors.
  • To assist the Perinatal Mental Health Service team in communicating difficult, complex, and sensitive information, which is both developmentally appropriate and psychologically informed to mothers and families.
  • To be responsible for implementing a range of evidence based psychological interventions for users of the Perinatal Mental Health Service in synthesis, adjusting and refining psychological formulations drawing upon different explanatory models and maintaining a number of provisional hypotheses.
  • To provide specialist psychological advice, guidance and consultation to other professionals contributing directly to clients' formulation, diagnosis, and treatment plan.
  • To undertake risk assessment and risk management for individual clients and to provide advice to other professions on psychological aspects of risk assessment and risk management in line with hospital and inter-agency policies and procedures.
  • To ensure that clients are appropriately consulted about the relevant aspects of their care and are empowered to express their views in a responsive environment.
  • To work in partnership with other disciplines and to maintain links with statutory and non-statutory and primary care agencies as appropriate.
