A new opportunity has arisen in our Director's Office for an
Executive Assistant to the Director to join our team.

This is an exciting time to join the Institute. Our new Director, Matt Hurles, took up position in May, and the Institute is undergoing a period of transformation as the wider Wellcome Genome Campus expands


About the role:

You will independently lead the day-to-day operations of the Director's Office and provide first class executive administration support to help the Director deliver on his priorities


You will:

  • Provide informed opinion, and independent decision making (within agreed parameters) to help the Director's decision making for all diary, inbox and logistical matters, which are critical to the delivery of his new strategy for the Institute.
  • Lead and own delivery of a high level, independent business management function for the Institute's decisionmaking Board and its subcommittees.
  • Experienced in managing and driving Principal priority list(s), making sure actions are appropriately progressed, responses to specific requests are coordinated and all deadlines are met.
  • Lead, design and deliver the Institute's annual strategic events programme, acting as a figurehead for the Director's Office, and using knowledge of the organisations networks to optimise delivery of this programme.
  • Support the Chief of Staff with informed opinion and advice on the strategic functioning of the Director's Office, by using continuous improvement methodologies to drive administrative process change.
  • Facilitate communication and decisionmaking from the Director's office to the organisation.

About You:

You will be an experienced Executive Assistant used to working in a fast paced environment. Highly organised, efficient, self-motivated, energetic and able to work independently.


You will need to be adept at building a wide range of relationships at all levels; diplomatic, tactful, discrete and comfortable in dealing with sensitive matters.


Essential Skills:


Technical skills and experience:


  • Experience of providing independent high quality and comprehensive Executive Assistant service to CEO level or equivalent including autonomously managing and maintaining a complex and fast moving diary and inbox management.
  • Using sound judgement to resolve conflicts and competing priorities in real time.
  • Qualification or equivalent experience of providing business management to a range of decision making boards
  • Awareness of how a Director's priorities link to strategy and its delivery.
  • Lead on the planning and execution of major events across multiple stakeholders.

Skills and Competencies:


  • Evidence of working autonomously in the delivery of an Executive Administrative service, without day to day supervision
  • Evidence of managing organisational decision making boards to a high level
  • The ability to communicate effectively at all levels
  • Build and maintain working relationships. High level of influencing and negotiating skills with senior staff
  • Experience of working in a constantly changing environment
  • Demonstrates good networking skills, building networks and alliances across the Institute and outwards.

The Director's Office supports the Director in the development, communication and implementation of the Sanger Institute's organisational strategy and manages the interfaces within support functions in operationalising the strategy.
