The post holder will clinically lead the respiratory nursing team working within the respiratory department and working alongside the respiratory consultants and allied healthcare professionals to provide clinical management and professional leadership in the delivery and development of respiratory services.


The post holder will work collaboratively with all members of the multidisciplinary team to promote, develop and evaluate the clinical respiratory service within Walsall Hospitals NHS Trust thus ensuring the delivery of high-quality patient care.


The post holder will clinically lead the respiratory nursing team working within the respiratory department, working alongside the respiratory consultants and allied healthcare professionals to provide clinical management and professional leadership in the delivery and development of respiratory services.

The post holder will be responsible for the provision of expert advice in respiratory nursing including all matters relating to oxygen therapy, chronic disease management and discharge planning, asthma, severe asthma and the administration of biologics, COPD, ILD and Bronchiectasis, referral to pulmonary rehabilitation and palliative care, for all staff respiratory patients and family/carers.


The post holder will be working across a variety of hospital settings including outpatient nurse led respiratory clinics, administration of biologics for the severe asthma patients and ward areas delivering patient care and education and clinical support of staff.

Supporting the new Acute Respiratory Virtual ward.

  • To work within an extended and expanding role, providing holistic, individualised approach for assessment, diagnosis, planning and implementation, practicing within agreed guidelines and protocols to deliver high quality patient services.
  • Initiate and develop nurse led services within defined protocols, working closely with primary care and the new Acute Respiratory Virtual ward, ensuring that high standards of nursing care are set and maintained within the respiratory service, monitoring through audit, feedback and review.
  • Professionally run and coordinate a nurse led respiratory clinic providing expert advice and develop individualised treatment plans where prescribing is appropriately tailored to an accurate respiratory diagnosis.
  • Within the field of expertise, and organisational policy, request specific clinical tests to establish a diagnosis.
  • Coordinate the severe asthma biologic clinic and attend the joint severe asthma clinic with the Respiratory Asthma lead. Linking up with ED to monitor and review frequent attendees and providing outpatient reviews for all ED attendees and hospital inpatients at 4 weeks as per the guidelines.
  • Assist hospital staff in the provision of oxygen prescriptions by patient assessment and work closely with the local HosAR to ensure adherence to national best practice standards and protocols.
  • To conduct an outpatient clinic for patients with Bronchiectasis and provide education and care liaising with physiotherapists in primary and secondary care and providing sputum monitoring in line with evidenced based standards and national guidelines.
  • Continue to develop and introduce the Colomycin service and assist the respiratory consultant lead to identify suitable patients that would benefit. Be a contact for patients and organise outpatient follow up and coordinate with the Clinical Measurement Unit regarding participation in diagnostics and the provision of equipment.
  • Continue to provide the best evidenced based care for patients with ILD and liaise with tertiary sites and primary care to develop local services and optimum care in hospital and the community.
