Mental Health Adviser
SBU/Department: Dean of Students Office
FTE: 1.0fte (working 37 hours per week)
Duration of Contract: Permanent
Salary: UH7 £36,333 per annum to £39,592 per annum, with the potential to progress £43,155 per annum on achieving designated skills and experience
Annual Leave: 30 days plus standard public holidays and an additional 4 days including the closure of our office between Christmas and New Year

Main duties and responsibilities

  • You will work in close collaboration across the Institution and relevant external organisations to support students with a range of mental health / complex difficulties in line with the Equality Act. This will involve risk assessment and management, 1:1 case work with students, including leading on support and liaison with internal and external services where required. They will also identify reasonable adjustments for students' studies, support students to access Disabled Students' Allowance (DSA) or alternative funding where appropriate and provide referrals/signposting where needed to help students to develop strategies for managing their studies. The postholder will also work as part of a team to promote Student Wellbeing services and mental health at the university, through delivering group sessions, presenting at induction talks and open days as needed.
    Skills and experience needed
  • You will have proven experience of assessing and managing Mental Health risk and crisis situations whilst also demonstrating proven experience of providing advice to individuals on a 1:1 basis. These individuals will be experiencing a range of mental health difficulties, including complex presentations, and experience of enabling and empowering these individuals is essential. The successful post holder will also have experience of successfully working within a team dealing with sensitive and confidential information whilst also managing their own large and demanding workload
  • It is essential that you have an understanding of the Equality Act 2010 and GDPR legislation as well as the types of reasonable adjustments and other support (including NHS trusts and local community support) that students with mental health difficulties will require within a higher education institution. The postholder will also possess the ability to liaise with colleagues to tactfully challenge attitudes, influence practice and manage change effectively; deal with emergencies/crises in a calm and efficient way; maintain clear boundaries; and undertake risk assessment and management plans.
    Qualifications required
  • The post holder should be educated with a minimum of a degree or equivalent.
