Overview of project/role


TfL's Surface Asset Operations is responsible for the safe operation and maintenance of our bus, highways, structures, tunnels, river piers, traffic signals and road technology assets 24 hours-a-day, 365 days a year.

We work closely with our contractors, customers, and suppliers to deliver excellent services across the network to keep London Moving 24/7 and assist TfL in meeting the Mayors Transport Strategy.

We also support the recovery of costs and damage to our operational assets by third parties.


To support the Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) Operations Managers in the provision, management and control of intelligent transport systems, communication networks and interfaces to provide London-wide consistency, resilience, security and safety.

In this role you will be required to train and provide guidance to the Asset Operations Response Desk (AORD) and other teams for ITS assets and networks.

Proactively monitor ITS asset performance and respond to escalation from the Response Desk and other teams, both internal and external, in line with agreed procedures.

Oversee and collaborate with the related supply chains in the resolution of system and/or communication network issues. Use ITS asset knowledge and experience to complete subsequent investigation and recommend improvements to processes.


Your normal working hours will be completed between the hours of Please note that under rare circumstances you may be required to work one off weekends/ nights if necessary.


Key Accountabilities

  • Responsible for the daytoday delivery of ITS network operational duties through oversight and direction, as necessary, of inhouse teams, suppliers and contractors to provide a costeffective, responsive and resilient service.
  • Responsible for the protection and maintenance of operational performance across all systems and communications networks to achieve specific scorecard objectives, leading followup exercises to seek improvements in processes, system, and supplier performance across Asset Operations for ITS assets and networks.
  • Acquire a working knowledge of all applicable ITS assets and communications networks, taking a proactive attitude to managing risks and being able to respond appropriately to enhance the customer experience.
  • Actively participate in open communication and knowledge sharing to build relevant capability across the team and delivering training to the Asset Operations Response Desk and other staff both internal and external as needed.
  • Responsible for asserting and discharging the Directorate's statutory obligations and legal duties including health and safety legislation.
  • Assist with the preparation and response to incidents and emergencies on the network by liaising with internal and external stakeholders and providing a point of contact to ensure safety, minimise disruption to customers and protect the assets.
  • Responsible for maintaining daytoday working relationships with stakeholders, including contractors, NMCC, Local Authorities, Emergency Services, other AO teams, other internal and external stakeholders and Key Customers making Transport for London easy to do business with and facilitating and identifying opportunities to generate nonfare revenue.
  • Undertake system acceptance testing prior to handover by providing operational input into system enhancements and project delivery and lifecycle activity to ensure quality and efficient outputs.
