About the role:
CFMS' Engineering Computing Services (ECS) team provides infrastructure and technical systems to internal stakeholders and external clients, making use of leading-edge scientific computing services including:
- Two HPC clusters totalling ~5000 cores
- Openstack private cloud systems
- High performance ethernet networking
- General purpose business computing
The ITSA will be exposed to a wide variety of exciting and leading-edge technologies and systems, with many opportunities to learn new skills.
Key Responsibilities:
The ITSA will take a key role in the day to day running of CFMS IT systems, including:
- Provide support to the wider technical team and clients
- Being responsible for tickets and resolving them in a timely manner
- Planning and implementing OS and software upgrades to virtual machines and physical servers
- Monitoring and analysis of system performance
Key Relationships:
The ITSA will work closely with the Head of ECS and the ECS team, but also with the wider CFMS technical team and directly with client end users.
Experience:
- Credible Linux or UNIX experience.
Skills, Knowledge and Competencies:
Essential:
- Knowledge of Linux and/or UNIX
- Demonstrate best practice administration management and installation of Linux based systems and technologies
- Knowledge of Linux security strategies
- Comfortable with Linux patching regimes
- Appropriately deploying and maintaining Linux systems in a secure manner.
- Comfortable with Linux patching regimes
Desirable:
- Basic networking knowledge
- Some experience of MacOS and MacOS administration
- Experience with programming or scripting e.g. bash, Python, Ansible
- Experience using source control mechanisms e.g. Git, Gitlab
- Experience/knowledge of virtualisation
