The Role

The Grounds Department sits within the Estates and Facilities team. You will be part of a small team within the Grounds team and will report to the Grounds Supervisor. Your job is essentially to help deliver a high quality, efficient, customer focused grounds maintenance service to our customers.

We are responsible for a number of the external elements of the Campus including the maintenance of the campus landscape, which incorporates all grassed and shrub areas, paths, hedges and trees.

We are also responsible for the maintenance of the extensive portfolio of outdoor sports grounds for all major team sports.

Our Sports Ground at Cochrane Park was the dedicated football training venue for the London 2012 Olympic Games.


The role is to look after the overall maintenance of the garden and grounds, reporting to the Grounds Supervisor the general jobs will include, grass cutting, hedge cutting, weeding, planting, leaf collection and winter maintenance duties.

These tasks will typically involve using a wide variety of powered machinery and we are also responsible for all the external cleaning of the site, as such, litter picking and bin emptying duties.


We have 4 positions available (2 open ended and 2 Fixed Term for a period of 6 months to cover our increased workload over the summer period).

We work 37 hours per week Monday - Friday. Our working times vary between teams but will be between the hours 7.00am and 4.30pm. There may occasionally be a requirement to work overtime to ensure of an effective and efficient Grounds maintenance service.


We are seeking people who can work well as part of a small but highly dedicated team, has exceptional attention to detail and a willingness to learn, including opportunities to obtain the none mandatory qualificiations mentioned below.

This position would be perfect for someone who has a passion for gardening and horticulture as well as having a good understanding of what is required to work in excellent quality gardens.

To be highly successful in this role, you should be a dynamic and enthusiastic individual with the ability to work using your own initiative as well as working closely with the existing team.

Key Accountabilities

General grounds maintenance tasks such as grass cutting, hedge trimming, weeding and planting.


Assist in winter maintenance program by clearing snow and ice from paths and roads in winter by hand and by machine.

Select and safely use a range of powered machinery to carry out daily tasks

Demonstrate excellent customer service skills on a daily basis.

Ensure of a clear understanding of general and in-house health and safety rules and regulations.

Completion of relevant safety documentation e.g. risk assessments and COSHH assessments.


Complete all mandatory and specialist training courses identified by the Grounds Manager to facilitate safe working to the required standards.

The Person (Essential)

Knowledge, Skills and Experience


Essential:

Experience of using a range of horticultural machinery
Strong communication skills and experience of delivering customer service
Sound working knowledge of legislation relating to health and safety
IT literate in the use of MS Windows

Significant plant ID knowledge (not essential)

Attributes and Behaviour

Able to carry out physically demanding tasks, often in extremes of weather

Willingness to carry out paid overtime on occasion to meet business need


Qualifications:

Level 2 qualification in horticulture or landscape management

NPTC PA1 and PA6

NPTC in Chainsaw, Maintenance and Cross Cutting

Other
Full clean driving licence is essential for the open ended positions due to the requirement to drive the van. This is not essential for the fixed term positions as duties can be realigned to take this into consideration.
