We are seeking an enthusiastic, organised individual to join the Kent, South London & East Sussex area in the exciting role of Area Income Advisor.

In this role you will help increase commercial awareness so we can adapt to demanding and continually changing financial landscapes, ensuring we continue to protect communities and enhance the environment.


Key responsibilities:


  • Maximise our current regulatory cost recovery service, develop our commercial focus and find opportunities for income generation and recovery
  • Influence and motivate to increase debt recovery through exemplar practices, skills and behaviours
  • Support debt recovery and minimise outstanding debt
  • Capitalise on income opportunities, including grants, partnership funding and innovative finance
  • Shape and develop area and national plans to contribute to business priorities
  • Provide a high standard of data management, recording and reporting skills
  • Work collaboratively across the business to deliver robust finance and income information
  • Network, influence and collaborate to develop commercial focus and financial confidence in the area from a wider, national perspective
This role could be full time, part time or a job share.

Responding to incidents is a central part of what we do.

You will be required to have an incident role and make yourself available to respond to incidents or provide business continuity support during an incident.

This may attract an additional payment and full training and alternative working arrangements will be available to support you with your incident role.


The team


The Environment Agency operates across England, our teams are geographically orientated so we can focus our efforts on supporting local communities and businesses.


Based in our Environment, Planning & Engagement department, your work will interact with various internal teams, from regulated industry to flood and coastal risk management and with external customers and stakeholders.

You will be part of a national network of income advisors to identify funding opportunities, best practice and share learning.


Experience/skills required


A commercial/financial background with an interest in income generation, finance, you will have well-developed communication skills, experience in business development.


  • A talent for engaging, influencing a wide range of stakeholders.
  • Excellent data skills, able to present complex information in a clear, engaging way.
  • Great attention to detail, interpersonal skills will be complimented by your enthusiasm to achieve results
  • Good planning skills, with the ability to handle multiple priorities, deliver to tight timescales are also key
Through your experience to date you will be able to demonstrate some of the following:

  • Working collaboratively with Leaders, Managers.
  • Able to articulate solutions to problems in a simple, engaging way.
  • Problem solving, decisionmaking skills.
  • Planning skills, with the ability to handle multiple priorities, deliver to tight timescales.
  • Regulatory commercial awareness.
  • Political awareness, sensitivity to deliver the right service when dealing with customers, stakeholders.
