The South Georgia Heritage Trust, a UK charity, is seeking a Communications Officer to tell the story of the sub-Antarctic island of South Georgia - one of nature's paradises which is also rich in history - and the Trust's work to conserve and protect it.


The South Georgia Heritage Trust aims to work with all who wish to preserve the island's natural and historical heritage for future generations - to redress past damage to its environment, to protect its wildlife now and in the future, and to preserve the human heritage of the island which so clearly shows the best and worst of humanity.

The Trust is seeking a full-time home based Communications Officer based in the UK to help tell the story of South Georgia and inspire support for its conservation and protection.


Overall purpose of Job

The Communications Officer will be responsible for:

Working with the SGHT CEO and colleagues to implement the SGHT Communications Strategy, including the social media policy, and working closely with other partners, including Govt.

of South Georgia & the South Sandwich Islands and USA non-profit Friends of South Georgia Island.

This post will report directly to the SGHT CEO.


Main duties
Deliver a scheduled rollout of communications to stakeholders and supporters throughout the year, including:

  • Online events including organizing a regular talks programme
  • E-Bulletins (newsletters) telling the story of SGHT and FOSGI's work and what supporters' donations are achieving
  • Social media news and blogs
  • Website updates
  • Online shop promotions (working with the Online Shop Promotions Group).
  • Promotion of SGHT and FOSGI resources such as educational packs
  • Liaise with the external PR consultants (who currently manage press communications and media outreach)
  • Work with the fundraising team and the team on South Georgia to help promote the Trust to cruise ship operators and visitors to South Georgia.
  • Work as secretariat to the Communications and PR subcommittee of the SGHT Board
  • Prepare quarterly communications reports for the CEO report
  • Develop and enhance internal communications with Trustees and colleagues
  • Develop and grow the SGHT social media channels in new and creative ways
