The Integrated Procedures Unit (IPU) has an exciting opportunity for a motivated, conscientious, and caring Patient Flow Support to join our core team.

This role is for 37.5 hours per week, worked over 5 days. The IPU Patient Flow team covers the Unit from 07:30 to 16:30 Monday to Friday.

IPU is closed on weekends and Bank Holidays, so this is a great opportunity to achieve an excellent work-life balance whilst joining a dynamic, fast-paced service.

This fixed term 12-month role will support the service during a period of extensive construction work within the Trust.

In return, you will gain valuable experience of working within oncology care and will be supervised through the Christie Care Certificate.


  • To transfer patients to and from the IPU reception in a prompt and timely manner, supporting the efficiency of all the services delivered through the Unit.
  • To provide assistance in mobilising patients from stretchers, wheelchairs and toilets.
  • To answer queries promptly and courteously, taking appropriate actions according to the mode of enquiry or the information required.
  • To maintain cleanliness in the work environment in line with Trust and local health and safety policies.
  • To welcome patients, visitors and others onto IPU and ensure that all communications are effective.
  • Under the delegation of a Registered Nurse, to undertake basic care delivery.
  • To work as part of the multidisciplinary team on IPU, prompting effective communication at all times.
  • To assist in stock rotation and assist the Housekeeper to ensure all clinical areas are appropriately stocked.
  • To chaperone the patient as required, ensuring appropriate support.
  • To prepare clinical areas for procedures, at the delegation of a Registered Nurse.
  • To maintain full compliance with all essential training and clinical skills competencies.


The Christie is an internationally and nationally recognised Centre for the treatment of cancer and we are leading experts in cancer care, research and education based in Manchester.

The Integrated Procedures Unit (IPU) is a nurse-led, fast-paced and dynamic service.

The unit consists of a procedures unit, interventional radiology unit, ultrasound room, surgical dressings clinic, outpatients clinic, day of surgery admissions unit, an operating theatre and second stage recovery bays.

You will become part of this complex multidisciplinary team and benefit from a comprehensive induction period.


DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

DIRECT CARE

Clinical:


  • To welcome patients onto the Unit and escort to main IPU reception through the clinical area
  • To answer queries promptly and courteously, taking appropriate actions according to the mode of enquiry or the information required
  • To inform or refer enquiries or problems to the relevant qualified staff where appropriate
  • When necessary initiate and assist with basic cardio-pulmonary resuscitation procedure
  • At the delegation of the Registered Nurse transfer the patient/client from one care area to another, i.e. inpatient ward to IPU or other area.
  • Provide assistance in mobilising patients from stretchers, wheelchairs & toilets

Clinical Support:


  • Appropriately monitor patients, informing relevant staff of progress and/or any difficulties/disabilities relating to mobility
  • Prepare individual patients and the environment to ensure effective movement and/or handling procedures
  • Chaperone the patient as required ensuring appropriate support
  • Actively support and assist in alleviating distress and anxiety of patients or carers, consistent with their personal beliefs and preferences.

Environment Support:


  • Be responsible for self and others through identifying risks and undertaking work activities in a safe manner
  • Maintain cleanliness in the work environment in line with Trust & local health and safety policies

DIRECT CARE

Clinical Support:


  • Welcome and orientate patients, visitors and others to the department and ensure that all communications result in effective customer care
  • Assist in stock rotation/assist Housekeeper to ensure clinical areas are appropriately stocked.

Professional:


  • Demonstrate respect for the individual patient, ensuring religious, cultural and social needs are considered at all times and acknowledge their individual rights. In all situations ensure consideration is made to the patients cultural background
  • Recognise and report abusive behaviour to an appropriate member of staff. Document same
  • Contribute to effective team working, by being fully involved, committed and participative to achieving full potential
  • Develop personal awareness of others perceptions, acknowledging and changing behaviour in response to any constructive feedback
  • Adhere to Trust Uniform Policy at all times
  • Undertake all training required to perform duties effectively to the requirements of the post
