Job Summary:


  • This is a key role responsible for the delivery of the Local History provision within the Local History and Archives Centre located on the top floor of Catford Library Catford Centre, 2324 Winslade Way, London SE6 4JU.
  • You will be responsible for developing, driving, and evaluating local history material and projects that continuously improve services to residents. The postholder will be working with the Archivist to develop current services to reflect current and future needs of our audiences.

Key Duties/Accountabilities:


  • To plan, develop and deliver a quality, innovative and flexible local history service
  • To manage, promote and develop Local History and Archives collections working closely with the Archivist
  • To promote and market the services of the Local History Centre
  • To work with colleagues to deliver and promote the use of the local history collections.
  • To engage with a range of customers and involve them in the development of local history services
  • To contribute to continuous service improvement through challenge and innovative thinking.
  • To initiate and undertake project work with a range of partners as necessary.
  • Plan, develop and deliver engagement with customers and partners to promote an understanding of local heritage and the local history and archive collections
  • Give professional advice and guidance to members of the public, Council departments and outside organisations, on local history matters
  • Develop and coordinate staff training around accessing the heritage collections and developing an awareness of local history and heritage. Enable colleagues to present displays and exhibitions of the Centre's materials, to educate and inform the local communities on the history and heritage of the Borough
  • Market and promote the Centre's services by talks, visits, displays and events. Maintain regular contact with local groups, schools and organisations, visit them and facilitate their visits to the Centre. Support customers and residents to access the heritage world through outreach, training and advice.
  • Work with the Archivist to develop the Local History publications programme, and assist in customer surveys, promotions and other marketing initiatives. Actively seek to publish new and relevant titles, liaising with relevant Council departments to ensure their efficient production.
  • Lead on all aspects of Local History work for the Library & Information service, including collection acquisition and development
  • Lead and direct the work of staff, placements and volunteers as allocated to the Local History and Archives Centre
  • Acquire materials to ensure that the collections are as comprehensive as possible. Seek out and arrange for the transfer, deposit, donation or purchase of relevant material in accordance with agreed collections policies. Record materials and where appropriate catalogue and index this material.
  • Establish ICT and digitisation priorities and work with other staff to implement ICT systems for the listing, indexing and retrieval of local history resources and collections. Maintain an awareness of developments in ICT and undergo relevant training to develop the use of computer based information systems for the heritage collections.

Essential Experience Required:


  • Experience of working with, and managing projects with a range of partners potential partners in the heritage world is essential.
  • Experience of of delivering services to a wide range of customers and community groups is essential.
  • Experience of working in a local history/archives environment is essential.

Essential Qualifications Required:

Chartered or qualified Librarian, Archival qualification (or equivalent standard through relevant experience) is desirable.


Additional information to note:


  • Working hours: 35 hours/week on a 3weeks rota including 1 Sat, 1 Sun, and 1 weekend off. Working pattern can be reviewed. This role also requires up to 2 late nights each week until 6pm and some Saturdays for which an enhanced payment is made.
