The Microbiology laboratory at Cambridge currently provides services to Addenbrookes, Royal Papworth, and the E&N Herts Hospitals, the surrounding district, and other NHS Laboratories.

It has active research and epidemiological interests. The laboratoryundergoes assessment against UKAS ISO 15189 standards and has strong teaching interests.

Set on the outskirts of the university city of Cambridge, Addenbrookes Hospital is one of the top hospitals in the UK and a thriving NHS Foundation Trust.

Addenbrookesis closely associated with leading educational providers including the University of Cambridge and is a major centre for biomedical research and education.


We have an exciting opportunity for a Healthcare Practitioner Virology/Molecular to work as part of the laboratory team, providing a high level of molecular analysis in order to provide patients with the highest level of diagnosis and treatment.

To contributeto the routine and developmental molecular service in accordance with Laboratory Quality and Safety protocols.

The post holder would be expected to assist in any UKHSA co-ordinated response or activity of a national/international nature, e.g., a Bioterrorismincident or a major disease outbreak, e.g., SARS, H5N1 influenza etc.


Main duties of the job

  • To process the specimens received and to undertake the related tasks in the molecular section, leading to the generation of results in accordance with agreed policies and standard operating procedures (SOPs)
  • Contribute to the development and evaluation of new protocols / procedures for tests / reagents / methods, as required and under supervision. Contribute to drafting and reviewing Standard Operating Procedures
  • Performance of a variety of techniques including use of various manual and automated nucleic acid extraction protocols, use of block based and real time DNA PCR in line with diagnostic assay portfolio.
  • To assist with the maintenance of consumables, specimen storage archives and equipment in immediate area of work. Also, to use and maintain automated equipment following manufacturers guidelines and training.
  • Under supervision and in concordance with BMS staff, to designate, on receipt, the range of tests to be performed on a variety of samples

Person Specification Essential:


  • Maintains professional competence in biomedical sciences.
  • Demonstration of ongoing participation in UKAS activity
  • Laboratory based working experience.
  • Working knowledge of laboratory bench areas, quality and safety principles and procedures
  • Competency on laboratory benches
  • Demonstrated experience in molecular techniques.

Desirable:


  • Science degree
  • Willing to study for higher level relevant qualifications.
  • Able to analyse and evaluate data based on experience.
  • To be able to assist in monitoring the wellbeing of less qualified staff in the allocated area of responsibility.
  • Initiative skills

Qualifications Essential:


  • BTech or equivalent in biological sciences
