We are looking for an enthusiastic Displays Supervisor to join our team at Blue Reef Aquarium Newquay, Cornwall.

You will manage the aquarists and volunteers, as well as develop and maintain animal displays with enthusiasm which educate and entertain visitors, all whilst achieving high standards of animal welfare and compliance with zoo licence standards and promotion of conservation of the marine environment.

In addition, you will be required to operate the whole site as part of a Duty Manager rota.


Duties/ Responsibilities

Animal Husbandry & Exhibits

  • Assist the Assistant Curator in the daytoday management of animal husbandry through a handson approach.
  • Undertake a daily Exhibit inspection, allocate daily tasks to the Zoological team and ensure remedial action is taken on any issues. Pass on any concerns to the Assistant Curator or General Manager where appropriate.
  • To continuously maintain and improve display standards throughout the collection with special interest in specific exhibits as agreed with the Assistant Curator.
  • Oversee the monitoring of the water quality and environmental controls throughout the collection and act on any issues highlighted by zoological team.
  • Undertake with the Zoological team pump and plant room maintenance.
  • Undertake operation and installations of LSS.
  • Ensure contact with the company vet is maintained and ensure all medicine administration and veterinary procedures carried out comply with veterinary advice and guidance.
  • Maintain strict code of practice for all administration and storage of all medical and COSHH substances and equipment.
  • Alongside the Assistant Curator, monitor feeding regimes ensuring the nutritional needs of all livestock are met and throughout the collection and monitor health issues related to diet where applicable.
  • Support the Zoological team with submission of development plans for individual exhibits and monitor progress.
  • Responsible for the maintenance and continued development of exhibit lighting, signage and interpretation throughout the collection.

Zoological & Site Maintenance

  • Responsibility for the maintenance of the Water Intake Pump, including weekly checks of the unitin the pump house.
  • Ensure all displays; marinerelated alarm systems, maintenance equipment and Life Support Systems are serviced routinely in accordance with procedures within the operations manual and adhering to Health & Safety Guidelines.
  • Responsible for the maintenance and continued development of the site, displays lighting and signage in displays areas.
  • Ensure records of maintenance are held for alarm calls including tests and actual alarms false alarms included.
  • Ensure the highest possible standards of cleanliness are maintained both within the attraction, service areas and grounds.

People Management

  • Responsible for staff, induction, training, and development.
  • To agree short/medium/long term goals for yourself and the Aquarists supported by the Assistant Curator.
  • You should have regular meetings with the Assistant Curator. Agreeing on short / medium / long term goals for yourself and aquarist team members. You should focus on achieving such goals through clear objectives and clear timescales.
  • Monitoring staff appearance, conduct and welfare in the Zoological department.
  • Ensure the Zoological departmentand all team members including volunteers and work experience comply with HSE regulations and companyhealth and safety procedures whilston the premises and when undertaking all tasks.
  • To oversee and review staff training and delivery of the conservation and education program.

Zoo Licence

  • To have a full understanding of the zoo license regulations and other statutory regulations
  • To work with the Group Curator / General Manager / Assistant Curator to ensure all aspects of zoo licensing are complied with and that all records are in the specified formats.
  • Be an active participant of the ethical review committee
  • Awareness and promotion of the conservation strategy throughout the activities of the zoological department

Finance Management

  • Control of the annual Zoological Budget alongside the General Manager and Assistant Curator.
  • Short and long term planning of the displays for the aquarium, ensuring that they are fully costed and justified for capital proposals and agreed with the General Manager / Curator.
  • To manage resources, be aware of costs and to look for better value for money
