Description

The University of Oxford is a stimulating work environment, which enjoys an international reputation as a world-class centre of excellence.

Our research plays a key role in tackling many global challenges, from reducing our carbon emissions to developing vaccines during a pandemic.

We have an exciting opportunity to join the Unix Platform Services Team within the IT Services Department as a Senior Unix Systems Administrator working in a flexible hybrid fashion.

IT Services is a key department that ensures that the University has robust, reliable and high-performing IT facilities it requires to support the distinctive needs of those engaged in teaching, learning, research and administration.

We value and recognise our own and the contribution of others, creating a great culture to work in and a place where we all feel we belong.

  • An excellent contributory pension scheme
  • 38 days annual leave
  • A comprehensive range of childcare services
  • Family leave schemes
  • Cycle loan scheme
  • Discounted bus travel and Season Ticket travel loans

The University also runs an enormous number of social groups and sports clubs for those looking for more than just a great place to work.

About the Role

As a Unix Systems Administrator, you will be responsible for managing Linux systems, primarily running Debian GNU Linux and Red Hat Enterprise Linux, as well as contributing to the strategic planning, design, implementation and management of services supported by the team.

Current projects include reviewing our webhosting service, refreshing our monitoring setup and migrating our configuration management systems.

Responsibilities also include:

  • Server management, including systems maintenance and deploying upgrades and security patches
  • Responding to service requests as the expert troubleshooter, resolving complex issues within a Unix environment, including networking, software, hardware and related areas
  • Identifying business and user requirements, including opportunities for new or enhanced services, and then contributing to their design and development.
  • Communicate and engage with suppliers, project, and service teams ensuring that solutions are delivered within budget and to agreed service levels.
  • Mentoring our less experienced members of the team is also strongly encouraged

About You

You will enjoy a busy and varied workload, and be capable of working both as part of a team and independently.

You will be enthusiastic about the opportunity to learn and improve skills when available.

Whilst the job description provides further detail about the role, we would be interested in hearing from applicants who perhaps do not have all the required technical skills, but can demonstrate the aptitude to develop them with the support of the team.

Application Process

The supporting statement must explain how you meet each of the selection criteria for the post using examples of your skills and experience.
Interviews will take place w/c 13 and 20 February either in person or virtually.
