We are now looking for an
Assistant Picture Editor - Books & Travel to lead on
creative picture research, with guidance from section editors, working with designers to find engaging images for stories.

You will be involved in illustrating articles on leading books and authors as well as curating enticing content for all our travel features both online and in print.


About the Role

  • Generate creative and engaging ideas for illustrating stories
  • Work closely with editors and designers to provide images for stories
  • Make decisions based on editorial suitability and negotiate fees within budget in collaboration with the Head of Photography and section editors
  • Create online galleries when and where appropriate
  • Organise flow of work across both short and long term projects with a view to publishing online and/or in print
  • Occasionally commission photography with the guidance of Head of Photography and Magazine Picture Editor

About You

  • Extensive experience in picture editing or research, ideally within the national media
  • Sound knowledge of generalist and specialist picture agencies and libraries and online archives
  • Experience of commissioning photography
  • Experience of handling budgets and fee negotiation
  • Demonstrable interest in photography and design
  • A good network of contacts
  • A good knowledge of freelance photographers in this country and abroad
  • Thorough understanding of copyright and image licensing
  • Ideally you'll have a demonstrable ability to bring a diverse perspective to this role
