Independent School Inspectorate

The Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI) is appointed by the Department for Education to inspect more than 1200 independent schools in England as well as 50 British schools overseas.

The ISI is a fundamental part of the regulatory process for independent schools, assuring high standards of education, pupil welfare and safeguarding for more than half a million children and young people.

We are a mission driven organisation with a set of four values which places children's wellbeing first and foremost, followed by emphasis on diversity, integrity and transparency.

The ISI is governed by a high calibre Board of nine Directors who are all highly skilled, experienced and deeply passionate about education and safeguarding children.

The Board has overall responsibility for the organisation, ensuring delivery of our mission and our financial viability.

Working with the Executive Team, the Board determines our strategy, monitors the overall organisational performance and promotes the long-term success of the ISI by identifying opportunities to create and preserve value.

The Chair

Our next Chair will have significant expertise in good governance and the interpersonal qualities to build effective and trusting relationships with a highly-skilled Executive Team and Non-Executive Board.

The Board and Executive Team already have substantial knowledge and experience from within the education sector so this is not a requirement of the Chair.

However, they should have significant experience of leadership in spaces with overlaying multiple regulatory frameworks where the stakes are high around human endeavour, and preferably that sit at an interface between the public and private sectors.

The Chair must also bring a strong understanding of the importance of safeguarding.

Time commitment:
about 5 hours a week

ISI have four Board meetings per year, as well as four Finance Committee meetings which the Chair is expected to attend.
