We have an exciting opportunity to become a Head of Department in the Competition Division, reporting into the Director of Competition.

The role is to lead the Competition Economics department.


Helping to deliver competition projects, you will play a key role in embedding the competition objective across the FCA, as well as helping to deliver key outputs such as market studies, competition analysis influencing wider FCA policy work, developing our competition pipeline and shaping our approach to competition remedies.

This is a fantastic opportunity, which will help you to build competition expertise and leadership experience in a cross-cutting senior role.


Key responsibilities:

  • Leading the Competition Economics department in the Competition Directorate.
  • Providing oversight and quality assurance of the economics analysis undertaken on all competition work, whether that be on pipeline development, market studies, enforcement work or remedies.
  • Ensuring the competition economics department has up to date skills and capabilities to deliver proportionate and robust economic analysis. This comprises developing clear competition economics training programmes and, where appropriate, initiating competition economics research.
  • Working with the Chief Economist to ensure competition economics is a core part of the FCA's Economics profession.
  • Playing a key leadership role in the Competition Leadership Team (CLT) by working effectively with the Heads of Department for Competition Enforcement and Financial Analysis, Competition Policy, and Regulatory Reform and Remedies.
  • Shaping the way in which the FCA's competition function operates including playing a crucial role in ensuring the FCA meets its competition objective and duty.
  • Within Competition's matrix management structure, contributing across the wider division on a range of projects. On project work, where relevant, you will oversee multidisciplinary teams of project delivery specialists, competition policy specialists, economists, financial analysts and lawyers.
  • Leading on engagement with colleagues across the FCA to ensure embedding of competitionbased thinking throughout the organisation, as per our competition objective.
  • Joining the Senior Leadership Team of the FCA during an exciting and challenging time of great change in financial services and its regulation.
  • Developing new capabilities and initiatives within Competition and the FCA.
  • Leading a division of talented and committed people through significant projects and programmes.
  • Utilising an indepth understanding of competition and economics to advance the FCA's competition objective in practice.
  • Influencing senior discussions in a dynamic and challenging environment, and to help shape the forward agenda for the Competition Directorate.
  • Helping with the strategic development of the directorate and of the economics profession.
Skills/Experience required


Minimum- Strong leadership and management skills, with the ability to inspire and lead teams.- Proven experience of leading high-profile work.- Strong knowledge and experience of competition economic issues.

- , embedding the FCA's Strategy and delivering- organisational priorities.

Essential- Strategic thinker with excellent judgment and analytical skills.- Strong communicator with proven experience of managing and influencing challenging and complex stakeholder relationships.- Experience of working as part of a leadership team to achieve divisional and cross-organisational objectives.- Proven experience of organising, monitoring, and delivering a complex portfolio of high-quality work with competing demands and deadlines.- Proven experience of building and leading multi-disciplinary teams with a strong analytical focus.- Experience of managing senior stakeholders in industry and/or within the FCA.

Desirable- Knowledge of other aspects of competition law or competition policy.
