EY's Corporate Finance Government & Transport team advises public and private sector clients on transactions and broader financial, strategic, and commercial advice across the government and transport sectors.

We support government and private sector clients on tackling some of today's biggest challenges including decarbonising the economy by transitioning to cleaner forms of energy; levelling up; delivering high quality and efficient public services; and strategically managing capital.


We are focused on growing our team across local public services, central government sectors (including Defence, Health, Justice and Regeneration) and transport.


We're looking for a motivated and passionate Assistant Director to join our team in either London or Manchester to focus on the central government sector.

Your key responsibilities

  • Leading integrated multiskilled teams to provide professional financial, commercial and strategic advice to clients, throughout the project lifecycle from structuring, initiation, delivery and close or recommissioning activity.
  • Leading people development including effective supervision, coaching, and mentoring of staff
  • Assist senior members of the team with key business development activities, from identification to managing relationships, including EY's wider growth strategies
  • Leading client meetings and presenting impactful reports to senior client stakeholders to facilitate effective decision making
  • Drafting, reviewing and delivering HM Treasury Five Case business cases
  • Structuring and advising on procurements, including evaluating bids received for projects on behalf of project sponsors and helping sponsors drafting bids for the provisions of public services
  • Building, working with and reviewing financial models, including establishing appropriate data structures and undertaking sensitivity and scenario analysis
  • Helping our clients make informed and robust evidencebased decisions through strategic options appraisals
  • Owning and fostering trusted relationships with senior clients that contribute to enhancing EY's brand and reputation
  • Providing support to help clients achieve their sustainability goals

Skills and attributes for success

  • An excellent understanding of central government sectors.
  • At least 8 years' experience of working in a relevant sector, either in a government or advisory environment
  • Experience of managing teams, including internal staff, clients and wider stakeholders
  • Working with and managing broad and complex stakeholder groups across public and private sectors
  • Strong strategic, commercial and financial acumen
  • Financial/data analysis and financial modelling capability
  • High quality report drafting and document preparation
  • Insightful and engaging presentational skills and experience communicating with senior stakeholders
  • The ability to thrive in a flexible working environment as part of a diverse and dynamic team

To qualify for the role you must have

  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written
  • People development experience and can effectively supervise, coach and mentor staff
  • Excellent Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint skills
  • Excellent written English and maths and strong project management skills
  • Ability to learn quickly
  • Experience of leading small multiskilled teams
  • Experience in building and reviewing Excel financial models
  • Experience in developing business cases
  • Experience of engaging at a Board level
  • At least five years' uninterrupted residency in the UK

Ideally, you'll also have

  • An advanced professional financial qualification e.g. CA, ACA, CFA, MBA.
  • Educated to bachelor degree level or equivalent
  • Prior experience of working in a relevant role
  • Excellent financial skills, including an understanding of corporate finance principles
  • The ability to build strong internal relationships within Corporate Finance and across other services, and ca
