Principle duties - To lead service redesign work on behalf of the Head of Nursing (Operations Centre) and work with a full range of stakeholders, both internal and external - Responsible for leading and managing the day-to-day business of the function, ensuring that the teams have up to date knowledge and managerial competence to perform their roles - Develop and maintain effective close working relationships with all staff including the Head of Nursing (Operations Centre), ToC and Clinical Site Managers and Matrons - To assist the Head of Nursing (Operations Centre) in the day-to-day functioning of operational processes by working within the Trusts policies and procedures - To represent the Head of Nursing (Operations Centre) at relevant internal and external meetings as required - Actively seek and identify opportunities for new ways of working to improve efficiency.

- Aim to ensure nursing services are benchmarked against high performing organisations nationally and internationally - Chair meetings as requested to facilitate communication and debate on professional and operational issues - Be aware of all delayed discharges and medically optimised patients in the hospital and assist in unblocking pathways using relationships with internal and external senior partners and escalate as necessary - Ensure processes at Ward/Dept encompass measures to ensure smooth transition of patients through the care pathway, for example, timely admission and discharge processes, nurse -initiated discharge (where appropriate).) - Ensure that the service is sensitive and responsive to patients needs and put patients central to the planning of services.

Services must be delivered in a professional, caring, and supportive manner - Identify areas of service improvement opportunity and support business case production, agreement, and implementation.

Use change management skills and Leeds Improvement Method to lead the implementation - Work with other leaders and managers to develop a culture of continuous quality improvement through ensuring processes and systems are in place to monitor and improve quality and patient experience - Identify improvements in own area and facilitate spread to other areas as appropriate PRINCIPAL DUTIES & AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY Value for Money Be responsible for the management of human and material resources within the designated area and play a key role in ensuring the CSU delivers a balanced budget.

Manage the delegation of ward/dept budgets to Senior Sister/Charge Nurses and Nurse Specialists providing support and advice as required. Ensure performance measures are implemented to monitor/develop financial management at ward/dept level.

Be responsible for the allocation of staff to all areas, ensuring adequate staffing cover is provided on a daily basis.

Review nursing establishments to ensure skill mix reflects current workload requirements and represents best use of resources.

Oversee the use of bank and agency staff and monitor expenditure to ensure financial balance is achieved. Assess the impact of extra hours worked by staff on their performance and the needs of the service. Review trends on expenditure and activity accordingly and action to be taken.

Quality of Care/Clinical Governance Work with members of the Clinical Management Team (CMT) to deliver high quality, timely health care.

Contribute to the implementation of National Service Frameworks (where applicable) and National Policy.

Work closely with Senior Sisters/Charge Nurses to secure and ensure the highest standard of clinical care is provided within available resources.

Work in conjunction with Clinical Directors, business managers and other CMT staff to ensure national patient access targets are met.

Support bed management processes within the CMT.


Ensure processes at Ward/Dept encompass measures to ensure smooth transition of patients through the care pathway, for example, timely admission and discharge processes, nurse initiated discharge (where appropriate).

Ensure that clinical governance processes at ward and department level encompass measures to ensure the quality of the fundamental and essential aspects of care within the CMT.

Play a leading role in clinical benchmarking, using the Essence of Care toolkit, ensuring examples of good practice are shared.

Ensure nurses work within the Trust Nursing Policy and Practice Guideline framework.

Lead developments in practice through policies and guidelines and support others in this process. Communicate effectively through daily contact with ward/dept staff. Be responsible for the monitoring and auditing of standards of care.

These standards will include areas such as cleanliness, quality of food and nutrition and the prevention and control of hospital acquired infection.
