Job description:

The Defence Business Services Knowledge and Information Management Records and Review Team consists of 20 records management specialists.

Our role is to safeguard the corporate memory of the MoD by ensuring that records are reviewed and selected for preservation or disposal in accordance with both the Public Records Act and the records retention policy of the MoD.

Transferring records selected for preservation to the National Archives (TNA) and other nominated places of deposit, such as museums, we play an active role in unlocking the history of our nation for the public.

We also play a vital role in ensuring long term national security, retaining and regularly reviewing records that are not appropriate for public release.


An Air Casualty File Reviewer is responsible for the individual review and cataloguing of RAF Casualty Files created during the Second World War in support of the department's ongoing RAF Casualty File project.

They are required to oversee the process of individually reviewing the content of each file and making informed decisions as to their suitability for permanent preservation at The National Archives, as well as creating and maintaining an accurate and detailed catalogue of all RAF Casualty Files.

An Air Casualty File Reviewer will also be responsible for organising delivery of these historical documents from repositories and the proper storage of them within our designated holding area, adhering to appropriate standards of record management.


It should be noted that the Air Casualty Files Project has a projected deadline, so the Air Casualty File Reviewer will be required to be able to utilise time management skills in order to meet the project deadline.


This role provides a unique and exciting opportunity to contribute to the preservation of the history of Defence for both for the Ministry of Defence's own corporate memory and the people of the United Kingdom.


This role is office based however, DBS are working hard to improve our access to, and use of, digital technology, empowering our people to work remotely (40% in the office).

Main Responsibilities

  • The review of RAF Casualty Files in accordance with the Public Records Act and the policies of the MoD.
  • Creating and maintaining an accurate catalogue of all reviewed files for use by The National Archives.
  • Responsibility for the organisation of a team of civilian volunteers tasked with the preparation of RAF Casualty Files for permanent preservation.


  • Secondary Responsibilities

  • Responsibility for ordering and receiving RAF Casualty Files from outside repositories
  • The maintenance of an organised and secure records storage area.
