An exciting opportunity has arisen for a dynamic and motivated senior trainee (ST4 or above) with an interest in leadership, management and quality improvement to join Harrogate and District NHS Foundation Trust as our Chief Registrar.


The Chief Registrar role provides senior trainees with 40% protected time to develop skills and confidence in leadership, management and quality improvement.

Learning that chief registrars gain from the Royal College of Physicians' (RCP's) bespoke development programme will be put into practice in a supported environment that provides autonomy, flexibility and support to develop and support projects that address key local challenges and priorities.

This may include service improvement, engagement and morale, education and training, workforce, and sustainability.

We have one Chief Registrar at the Trust (from any specialty) and when you hear that the Chief Registrar acts as a link between junior doctors and senior leaders they really do In this role you work closely with the senior leadership and education teams.

In an informal sense, you are in a unique position to bring the trainee perspective into corridor conversations. In a more formal sense, your attendance is welcome and appreciated at Board, Senior Management Team and Education meetings.


What does the Chief Registrar actually do at that is up to By default, you are a leadership figure for junior doctors at the Trust, but the role has sufficient autonomy for you to choose to delve deeper into issues of your choosing.

An example of a QI project that I have undertaken this year is a piece looking at the junior medical workforce structure and rostering-everyone's favourite topic, right?


The chief registrar will be expected to attend modules delivered as part of the RCP's bespoke development programme, which will cover, for example, change management, team culture and development, quality improvement, leadership, influencing and personal resilience.


Applications are open to senior trainees:

  • At ST4 level or above in any specialty training programme (not just medical specialties)
  • Working full time or lessthanfulltime
  • Who have a national training number
  • Who have full GMC registration.
This is a fixed-term role for 12 months. The role can be undertaken in programme or out of programme (training or experience).
