We are looking for a Category Development Manager to join the team You will be accountable for the management of the Food to Go & Impulse categories (c £60m spend) supporting the Head of Retail in delivering the overall business plan for all Retail areasof spend c£270m.

More about the role:


  • Supporting the Head of Retail in defining and implementing the Category strategy collaborating with key stakeholders to ensure buy in & alignment.
  • Accountability for the Category pipeline, identifying & driving opportunities to increase activity and spend.
  • Full accountability for all commercial & financial KPI's providing regular updates on performance.
  • Undertake & Lead all contract negotiations with suppliers/manufacturers maximising all commercial terms & metrics whilst maintaining strong effective relationships
  • Develop relationships with key suppliers that promote honest collaborative ways of working creating an environment that promotes innovation and strategic thinking.
  • Full awareness of market trends identifying opportunities to develop ranges and excite our customers.
  • Full understanding of the Business requirements of the Compass sectors & External clients aligned to Category Strategy.
  • Deliver effective communication to all internal and external stakeholders that is engaging & ensures full understanding. Working with suppliers to showcase opportunities to drive the Category forwards.
  • Foodbuy Procurement Framework (FPF)
  • Ownership of steps 1, 3, 4 & 5 (business needs, category strategy, implementation and continuous improvement)
  • Accountable for process stewardship to effectively capture and influence business requirements across all categories of spend for the UK&I to help us win and retain clients and consumers (individual accountability for category spend) and responsible foreffective implementation of agreed ranges & supply chains post sourcing events.

Who you are:


  • Food buying or Food category management experience is desirable
  • Ability to analyse and interpret data to help inform decisions and to influence stakeholders
  • Comfortable working in a pressurised, fast paced and deadline driven environment
  • Ability to effectively plan and manage multiple workstreams to a project timeline
  • Excellent negotiation skills
  • Continually looks for category development opportunities that will advantage Foodbuy's clients in their marketplace
  • Provides leadership and guidance across the function & is accountable for the results and outputs of their team
  • An expert with analytical tools, able to draw conclusions and communicate recommendations from complex data via a holistic approach and not just functional optimisation
  • Creates and manages multiple project plans and can prioritise multiple demands effectively and with consensus.
  • Strong management skills
  • Taking fair, considerate, firm and documented action to hold people to the expectations. This includes providing feedback and following up regularly.
