Job summary:

We're looking for an apprentice fire safety information assessor to develop skills and experience and contribute towards setting a new standard in the quality and safety of high-rise residential buildings.

You will work towards gaining a Level 4 Diploma in Fire Safety while getting on the job experience in fire safety by providing advice to local planning authorities on the fire safety of high-rise residential developments.

Job description:

As an Apprentice Fire Safety Information Assessor, you will be working to gain a Level 4 Diploma in Fire Safety by the end of your 2-year apprenticeship.

Along the way, you will have the opportunity to be involved in assessing some of the most high-profile developments in England.

You will be able to develop and use fire safety knowledge in a way which can have a real impact on improving the quality and safety of the built environment, and people's lives.

This is a unique opportunity to gain a qualification, skills and experience in a new organisation that is at the forefront of establishing a more stringent building safety culture in the wake of the Grenfell Tower tragedy.

You will have good writing and analytical skills and be computer literate in order to provide good quality responses to consultation requests from local planning authorities.

Good organisational skills are also needed to manage a caseload, work to deadlines and balance your apprenticeship training with the demands of casework.

You'll be supported by a mentor and work in a supportive environment with regular peer reviews where you can get advice and share lessons learned with your colleagues.

As a Civil Servant you'll also be able to work flexibly and benefit from the generous Civil Service terms and conditions, including a civil service pension.

This is a development role so to be eligible to apply, the training and development you receive must provide you with significant new skills and learning. This is an essential requirement for apprenticeship funding and means you must not already be fully qualified or significantly experienced in this type of work

At HSE, we are proud to be able to offer our people the opportunity to work in a hybrid way which combines working from home and the office.

This is a voluntary, non-contractual arrangement and your allocated office will be your contractual place of work.

The role is desk-based and the team work in a hybrid way meaning you will have an office base and have the option to work from home, with the occasional need to travel to HSE's offices for meetings with your mentor, training and team meetings. If you want to, we'll support you to work from home effectively with the supply of good IT kit and office furniture, to make your home working experience comfortable and safe.

Person specification:

  • You will be curious and analytical.
  • You will have an understanding of working with legislation, regulations and relevant fire safety standards.
  • You will be able to manage your workloads to meet deadlines and service standards.
  • You will work well within a team and contribute positively by sharing knowledge and ideas for continuous improvement.
  • You will have clear, assertive and effective verbal and written communication skills.

In addition, to be eligible for your apprenticeship you must:

  • Be aged 16 or over (there is no upper age limit).
  • Have the right to work in the UK and have been ordinarily resident in the UK/EU/EA for 3 consecutive years before starting the apprenticeship.
