The Fire Safety Officer will help shape and implement the UK Estate Fire Strategy to improve all life safety systems and processes, assessing risk and implementing appropriate mitigations or procedures.

The post holder will also support the delivery of the wider Estate Operations FCDO estate activities, to act as Intelligent Client Function for Capital Projects ensuring that fire safety is embedded in the design and or processes to ensure a government soft landings approach is followed.


Leading on Fire Safety you will Chair the Fire Safety Working Group and own the Fire Safety Risk Register for the UK Estate driving improvements to mitigate and or eliminate risk.

This will extend to identifying and prioritising life cycle replacements for all life safety systems and building business cases to justify such investments.


The job can be based in London or Hanslope Park near Milton Keynes, but regular travel between these sites is expected and occasional visits to Abercrombie House (East Kilbride) will also be required.

The post holder will be expected to prioritise duties based on fire risk considering a risk averse approach from FCDO senior management, and the role will report into the Head of Operations UK & Deputy Engineer.


Job description:


Roles and Responsibilities

  • Act as Subject Matter Expert for Fire Risk Management and lead on the development and implementation of the Estates, Security & Network Directorate (ESND) Fire Strategy.
  • Provide assurance to FCDO that compliance with statutory duties as prescribed by the Regulatory Reform Fire Safety Order and Fire Safety England Regulations are met.
  • Manage the ESND Fire Safety Risk Register to track risk and progress mitigations to an acceptable level of risk, reporting and escalating areas of operational concern.
  • Develop and implement fire safety policies and procedures, liaising and engaging with FCDO departments & stakeholders to align with security constraints and 'Business as Usual'.
  • Conducting Fire Safety Inspections and audits to ensure departmental compliance with Health & Safety obligations.
  • Work with service delivery partners to ensure contracted duties to manage fire risk are discharged including maintenance, testing, exercise, and training.
  • Investigate & report on all fire safety related events.

Person specification:


This role requires you to attain Developed Vetting (DV) security clearance.

Minimum Criteria

  • Expert level understanding of relevant UK Fire related regulatory requirements, along with a sound working knowledge of wider UK statutory compliance requirements, as applicable to running an effective operational estate, for example RRFSO, BS.5839, BS.5266, etc.
  • Holding or working towards a relevant, recognised qualification in Fire Safety (for example Level 3 or 4 Diploma in Fire Science & Fire Safety or related building industry qualification with related experience in designing or managing fire safety). Fire Qualifications and exams )
