Entry requirements


You should already hold or be working towards a minimum of 2 GCSEs (or equivalent) A*-C or grade 4 or above including Maths and English.

Please note that you'll be required to provide original certificates and/or predicted grades as proof for your eligibility checks.


You must be 18 years of age by the 9th of September 2024 to be eligible for this apprenticeship due to health and safety requirements including safeguarding, we require applicants to be a minimum age of 18.


Job overview


Our Project Controls team are responsible for monitoring and systematically analysing progress and performance data on a variety of projects and new initiatives.

Your role will help drive efficiency and ensure that we are delivering value for money, whilst developing expertise in estimating, planning, scheduling and cost engineering.


What will I be doing?
You'll gain experience on capital investment projects, asset maintenance and operations.

By the end of the scheme, you'll be skilled in a variety of controls areas which are transferrable to a dynamic and highly rewarding career.


As an apprentice, your two-year development programme will be made up of four-five placement rotations which will develop your understanding of the different aspects that make up Project Controls as a business function, including Planning, Risk and Commercial.

Alongside this, you'll be studying for the Level 3 Diploma in Project Control Practice, as well as a foundation certificate in Project Management and professional training in site safety.

Our aim is to equip you with the range of skills and experience you need for your successful career. We also understand that everyone's career and ambitions are different, so every apprentice's journey with us is unique.


Here's an idea of what yours could look like:

Placement 1 - Deep Tube Upgrade Programme - 6 months

Developing expertise in estimating costs for each element of the project to ensure that the project stays within budget.


Placement 2 - Four Lines Modernisation - 6 months

Monitoring and systematically analysing progress and performance data on the projects, to ensure that project stays on track.


Placement 3 - Project & Programme Directorate - 6 months

Creating insightful reports to allow the Project Manager to make informed decisions, and assisting with change requests on projects.


Placement 4 - Major Stations - 6 months

Working with the Planner to create a robust and accurate schedule to ensure that the project runs to plan.


Placement 5 - Asset Performance Directorate - 6 months

Supporting the management of risk to the projects, to ensure that risks and opportunities are identified.

You'll complete four to six-month placements working in a broad range of diverse business areas. These could include London Underground, Surface Transport and buses, Crossrail and pedestrian and river boat services.


You'll learn a variety of skills including how to create a robust and accurate schedule, how to estimate costs for each element of the project, what factors need to be considered to prevent risks and how to use your good interpersonal skills to ensure that the whole team is informed and working together.


Where can this career take me?


Upon successful completion of this scheme, you could roll-off into a variety of controls roles, depending on your area of interest.


Some examples include:


  • Project Controls Assistant
  • Assistant Planner
  • Assistant Risk Manager
  • Data Controller

These can then lead to more senior positions such as:

  • Planner
  • Senior Planner
  • Risk Manager
  • Project Controls Manager

What training and support will you get?
You will be working towards a Level 3 Diploma in Project Control Practice. You'll also have opportunities to complete additional training courses. Typically, you will have one study day a week, with college sessions approx. once a month for the first 15-18 months.

Whilst on the scheme, we'll support your technical development through a wide range of on-the-job practical experie
