Description

The role
Port Operative Apprentice.


The role will be primarily onsite work on ships/quayside and in terminals with some office work including time for completion of the apprenticeship.

Due to the nature of port work, the role is for those aged 18+.


The role will be for 18 months with the opportunity to gain a full-time position afterwards upon completion of apprenticeship.


Primary role

  • To perform in line with the Port of Boston policies
  • Completion of Port Operative Apprenticeship level
  • General Stevedoring including; weighbridge operative, tug and shunter driving, forklift trucks including various attachments (paper clamps, bale clamps, poles), overhad gantry cranes
  • Moving cargo around the Port and within warehouses
  • Operating the scanner phones and the relevant software
  • Cleaning & tidying up
  • Reporting any damaged cargo, any damage to plant & equipment
  • Reporting any near misses, incidents or accidents
  • Always working in a safe and efficient manner
  • Displaying a duty of care towards plant, equipment and others at all times
  • Any other additional duties that may be reasonable required of you by your line manager

Accountabilities

  • Participate in any training deemed necessary in order to improve individual skills
  • Subject to suitable training for operating plant & equipment (including preuse checks)
  • Effectively promote a health, safety, and environment culture
  • Carry out work according to the risk assessments and safe systems of work
  • Cleaning of equipment and site as required and assisting in various other port duties
  • Active approach in identifying improvements and opportunities

Requirements:


  • Must be 18+ to work on a Port
  • Proactive attitude to Health & Safety
  • Excellent ability to navigate IT equipment e.g. smartphone & computer
  • Physically fit in order to access ships & plant/equipment
  • Level 1 English & Maths (requirement of apprenticeship)

Desirable (not essential)

  • Experience of working in a busy & fastpaced environment
  • Full UK driving licence (car) licence
  • Experience of operating plant & equipment preferably in a similar industrial environment
  • 5 GCSEs level 2 including both English & Maths at Grade 4 (Grade C) or above

Working hours

  • 40 hours per week (of which 6 of those hours per week will be dedicated to 'off the job training' as part of the apprenticeship)
  • Standard working hours 0700 to 1600 hrs (1hour unpaid lunch)
  • Please note these hours may vary depending on requirements

Benefits
- £8.40 per hour (£17,472 per annum) Monday to Friday

  • Pay review at 12 months of employment
  • Potential for full time employment upon completion of apprenticeship
  • Optional paid overtime at 1.5x hourly rate after 40 hours
  • Port Operative Apprenticeship level 2 qualification including NVQ Level 2 certificate in Port Operations & Level 2 certificate in Stevedoring essentials
  • Potential to obtain qualifications for lifting operations, loading shovel, forklift truck, tractor units, skid steer, first aid, fire awareness, crane operation

Please note that random screening is undertaken for substance abuse and a zero-tolerance policy is operated. A pre-employment medical may be required after acceptance of job offer due to the physical nature of the role.
