Description
To provide stores, laboratory support and biological shipping services to members of the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology (LMB).

Responsibility for biological material shipments ensuring that items are appropriately packaged and labelled to allow their movement both nationally and internationally considering relevant shipping requirements for the materials in question.

Stores services include the receipting and delivery of goods and manning a stores counter.

Laboratory support services include the dispensing of liquid nitrogen, installation/replacement of laboratory gas cylinders and movement of furniture items when required.


Main duties/ Key responsibilities:

  • Regular shipping of biological materials to other research laboratories and scientific facilities throughout the UK and internationally.
  • Ensure all biological shipments leaving the premises are appropriately packed and labelled to International Air Transport Association (IATA) guidelines. Full training and regular refreshers will be provided to ensure continuing certification.
  • Provision of a wellstocked and organised environment in which shipments can be safely prepared and stored.
  • Keeping up to date with legislation for shipping biological materials and adhering to the rules.
  • Follow every shipment to completion ensuring appropriate action is taken with couriers and customs.
  • Serve members of staff and visiting workers at the Stores counter with a variety of goods including chemicals, enzymes, equipment and stationery (approximately 1000 stock materials at an average of 300 issued per day). This requires a detailed knowledge of materials, material codes and locations.
  • Responsibility for the accurate inputting of delivery details to book in parcels received as special purchases. Also checking and booking of stock materials, ensuring the correct products and quantities are received. Unpacking and placing recyclable packaging in the correct waste flow ensuring only minimal packaging enters the Laboratory.
  • Using online system for processing all goods received and issued including using the system for enquires on stock levels, prices, locations and due date of arrival of material and special orders.
  • Replacement of gas cylinders when required, which will include delivery and collection. Assistance with liquid nitrogen replenishment throughout the LMB including the replenishment of divisional cell banks.
  • Replenishment of tissue culture media and tissue culture plastics from stores stock items on a daily basis.
  • Working with members of the LMB when required to move furniture.
  • Providing cover in all areas during periods of absence.

Working relationships:


You will report to the Stores Manager and will interact with other Stores Team members, the Labor Services Team and other Operations Group managers and their teams, scientists and support staff across the LMB and with external suppliers as necessary to assist with any day-to-day activities required for the smooth and effective running of the Laboratory commensurate with the band.


You will be expected to be in contact with couriers, air carriers and customs to ensure all shipments arrive at the correct destination on time.


Additional information:
This role will prioritise the shipment of biological materials above other duties between Monday to Thursday each week.

Person Specification

Education / qualifications / training required:

Essential:
Good standard of education.


Desirable:
Hold a full clean driving licence.
Hold a forklift licence.


Previous work experience required:

Essential:
Previous experience of Stores / Goods-in.
Proven experience of customer relations in a similar position.


Desirable:
Previous work experience in Stores within a scientific/academic environment.
Previous work experience of sending biological shipments in the UK and internationally.


Knowledge and experience:

Essential:
Computer literate.


Desirable:
Knowledge of the International Air Transport Association (IATA) guidelines.
