ABOUT THE ROLE


Oxford University Press seeks a versatile Acquisitions Editor to commission and manage digital Reference publications in the humanities, social sciences, and sciences.

The Acquisitions Editor would work within a friendly, highly collaborative international team. Our aim is to produce exceptional content that synthesizes global scholarship. This is a unique opportunity to develop major publishing initiatives representing worldwide perspectives.


Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following: establishing publishing strategies for select fields within OUP's Reference programs; identifying new Reference publishing opportunities; editorial management of a suite of digital products; managing and recruiting editorial boards; preparing projects for internal approval by drafting proposals, commissioning reviews, and negotiating contracts.

The Acquisitions Editor will work closely with OUP editorial teams, Sales, Marketing, Project Editors, Operations, and others in a collaborative environment.


  • Primary Responsibilities:_
  • Acquire new modules in the humanities and social sciences as part of OUP's Oxford Research Encyclopedias and Oxford Bibliographies programs.
  • Manage existing modules within those programs.
  • Work with academic advisors and editorsinchief to develop strategic publishing plans for largescale digital works.
  • Identify new digital Reference product opportunities for library markets.
  • Prepare proposals, budgets, and contracts for new products.
  • Represent the department and projects within OUP and at library and academic conferences.
  • Contribute to the editorial direction of the scholarly Reference program.
  • Ensure our content reflects the diverse voices in the academic community.
We operate a hybrid working policy that requires a minimum of 2 days per week in the Oxford office.


ABOUT YOU
To be successful in this role, you will ideally have a minimum of 3 years of editorial experience.

You will have knowledge of the publishing industry, including an understanding of the academic publishing landscape, competition analysis, the peer review process, etc.

You will ideally demonstrate familiarity with scholarship in the humanities, social sciences, or sciences is preferred along with familiarity with the library market


Other desirable qualifications include:

project management experience; strong problem-solving and organizational skills; interest in digital publishing; ability to communicate clearly and effectively in writing and conversation; ability to manage time effectively; ability to work within a team; experience with multi-media publishing.
