The Opportunity


We are delighted to be offering the opportunity for an Assembly Inspector (Electrical / Mechanical) to join us at Leonardo in Basildon.

You will be part of the Integrated Sensing and Protection line of business, which is a leader in delivering defence electronics, mission critical systems for situational awareness, electronic warfare, communications and surveillance across the land, air and sea domains.


What you'll do as an Inspector


As an Inspector, you will have the opportunity to work as a key part of the operations team and contribute to cross-functional projects.

You will be a positive influence within the project teams to support the future of the business and affect the production processes.


You will be part of the busy Operations Team, working alongside an established team of highly knowledgeable operators, supported by on-going training to ensure you have the best opportunities to progress your career.

We are looking for someone with a passion for working with high quality products, innovative processes, has a keenness to learn and has pride in their attention to detail.


What we need from you
As an Assembly Inspector, you will need to have:

  • An experienced electronics/electromechanical inspector that can inspect to IPC-610 standards
  • Someone that can recognise defects on PCB's and mechanical assemblies
  • Understanding of soldering to IPC standards
  • Working within a cleanroom environment under high power microscopes
  • Complete understanding of FOD/ESD/"clean as you go"
  • Attention to detail and ability to inspect work ensuring that quality defects are flagged and constructive feedback given
  • Ability to inspect to written instructions and drawings while adhering to production process times
  • Conversant with raising quality notifications
  • Coordinate and control production equipment inline with company processes
  • Ability to carry out both repeat production and varied one off types of work
  • Ability to identify and work with a range of hand tools to a high level of dexterity, precision and accuracy.
  • Ability to interpret engineering drawings, wiring diagram, BOMs (bills of material) and follow technical manufacturing instructions.
  • Ensure that quality standards are maintained and acceptable levels of workmanship met.
  • Ability to comply with Health and Safety requirements such as risk assessments and COSHH.
  • Ability to contribute to continuous improvement activities, both individually or as part of a team.
  • Familiarity with soldering technology, including tools, solders, fluxes, cleaning methods, soldering techniques and surface mount technology.
  • Familiarity of electrical and electronic assembly techniques, including cable forms, printed circuit assemblies, enclosure assemblies.
  • Awareness of FOD (foreign Object Debris) and ESD (Electro-Static Discharge) safe working practices.
  • Awareness of raising assembly or supplier quality related defects and quality notifications.
  • Maintain proactive communication with Team Leader and adjacent functions such as Project, Engineering or Quality as required.

What we would prefer you to have:

  • Current IPC certificates in J-Std-001, IPC 610
  • Experience with Microwave Circuitry
  • Previous experience of military and aerospace products
  • Experience in a range of hybrid microelectronic assembly techniques including device attachment methods and interconnection techniques
  • Experience of inspecting of cables, wires, harnesses and soldering to IPC Standards inc J-Std001, IPC 610/620 and rework standard IPC 7711/2
  • Previous experience of military and/or aerospace products, or adjacent industries such as automotive.
  • Knowledge or experience with SAP or similar ERP systems.
  • Basic computer literacy and familiarity with Microsoft Office programs.
  • Comfortable dealing with frequent change, delays, unexpected events or ambiguity.
