Main Functions:


  • To support the Early Years Teacher to facilitate the active participation of children in the academic and social activities of the school/nursery setting.
  • Contribute to raising standards of achievement for all students.
  • Create an environment that is safe, clean and welcoming, with wellkept educational resources.

Supporting the Children

  • Under the direction of the Early Years Lead, supervise the class in following a programme of activities.
  • Provide specialist learning support (requiring indepth knowledge and experience) to children with severe special needs, or where English is not their first language.
  • Take responsibility for delivering learning activities with groups who would benefit from a different learning approach, as agreed with the Early Years Lead.
  • Ensure the development of an environment, which provides high standards of physical, emotional, social and intellectual care for children.

Supporting the Early Years Teacher

  • To use initiative and support the Early Years Lead in ensuring the effective daily running of the
Nursery provision.

  • Develop effective communication skills with parents/carers and colleagues, encouraging them to participate in the children's progress and development.
  • Observe each child's progress and use the information gained to inform next steps, create learning journeys and inform achievement, noting progression and continuity.
  • Contribute to the development of APDRs for children with special needs.
  • Provide feedback on learning activities, and contribute to school review and development planning.
  • Encourage and promote the inclusion and acceptance of all children in the nursery.

Aid the learning of nursery children by:

  • Clarifying and explaining instructions.
  • Ensuring that the child is able to use the equipment and materials provided;
  • Motivating and encouraging the child as required;
  • Supporting the children in respect of local and national learning strategies, e.g. literacy, numeracy,
ICT etc;

  • Develop appropriate resources to support the children;
  • Liaise with the Early Years Teacher about individual programmes of work for children with SEN.
  • Ensure effective communication with the children in the provision.

Supporting the Provision

  • To develop practise that promotes the characteristics of effective learning.
  • Organise the learning environment and develop appropriate classroom resources, as required.
  • Assume the role of a Paediatric First Aider within the provision.
  • Attend to any firstaid issues and ensure that that all children who suffer any injury or accident are dealt with appropriately in accordance with the school's agreed procedures.
  • Maintain strict hygiene and cleanliness standards of the Nursery provision, in line with Health &
Safety and COVID Risk Assessment.

  • To ensure all records are properly maintained in accordance with policies and procedures, GDPR and Data Protection regulations.
  • To undertake any other reasonable duties, as directed by the EYFS Lead and/or SLT, in accordance with the aims and objectives of the school.

Supporting the School

  • Be aware of, and comply with, policies and procedures, e.g. child protection, health, safety and security, confidentiality and data protection, reporting all concerns to an appropriate person.
  • To develop nursery planning adhering to the school's EYFS schemes of work.
  • Accompany staff and children on visits, trips and outofschool activities as required.
  • Develop and maintain effective relationships with other staff, parents/carers.
  • Developing positive working relationships with other professionals and external agencies, for the benefit of children and their families.
  • Attend relevant meetings as required, eg. parent consultations, staff meetings
  • Assist in facilitating school events, e.g. school plays, open evenings
  • Promote the facilities of the school.

Supporting the School

  • Be aware of, and comply with, policies and procedures, e.g. child protection, health, safety and security.
This job description sets out the duties of the post at the time it was drawn up.

The post holder may be required from time to time to undertake other duties within the school as may be reasonable expected, without changing the general character of the duties or the level of responsibility entailed.

This is a common occurrence and would not justify a reconsideration of the grading of the post.
