Description
The post holder will assist the clinical team to provide a standard of patient
care which is in accordance with agreed nursing practice and Trust Policy,
through the provision of basic nursing care and housekeeping duties. The
post also involves a wide range of duties including maintaining the ward
environment, ensuring a high standard of ward cleanliness, stock control and
nutritional related duties.

Provision of care for women admitted for the following
- elective gynaecological surgery daycase/in-patient
- emergency admissions with gynaecological complications
- emergency admissions of pregnant women less than 20 weeks
- elective admission for management of miscarriage
- elective admission for termination pf pregnancy

In accordance with the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, and other supplementary legislation, all employees are required to take reasonable care to avoid injury during the course of their work and co-operate with the Trust and others in meeting statutory requirements.

Development Review

Key performance objectives, development needs and compilation of a Personal Development Plan will be discussed and agreed at Annual Development Review meetings.

Patient Care

  • To provide advice as appropriate within own sphere/limitations of
practice.

  • To provide care that ensures the privacy and dignity, and comfort of
women

  • To transfer/escort women to other areas of the service


Health care Assistant version 2 HD May 2018 - Maintain clear, accurate, legible and timely written documentation in designated documentation, observing and reporting any changes in a woman's condition to the Nurse in charge.


  • Be able to respond calmly in an emergency situation assisting the Registered Nurse with Clinical emergencies. Have an understanding of the procedures to summon clinical support.
  • Ensure all patients nutritional requirements are met
  • Perform venepuncture under the guidance of the Registered Nurse or relevant HCP
Ward environment

  • Ensure that the ward is of a high standard of cleanliness in all areas, and giving assistance when appropriate.
  • Participate in ward audit to measure that standards are achieved.
  • Cleaning of kitchen areas including appliances.
  • Reporting any faults with fixtures and fittings and actively monitoring repairs and maintenance.
  • Awareness of and implementing Infection Control policies.
  • Preparation of bed areas for patient admissions or discharges.
  • Ensure ward linen is adequately stocked.
  • General tidiness of all ward areas.
  • Ordering of ward provisions via telephone, computer and fax, ensuring that all stocks delivered to the ward are appropriately stored.
  • Completing the weekly cleaning checklist
  • Maintain stock levels of consumables

COMMUNICATION

  • Communicate effectively with multidisciplinary team, families and other agencies.
  • Be able to take and relay messages accurately.
  • Participate in meetings when required.
  • To have an understanding of different cultures, religions etc.
  • To have an awareness of barriers to communication.
The post holder will be expected to communicate and collaborate with:

  • Matrons
  • Registered Nurses

  • Senior Medical staff
  • Multidisciplinary clinical teams

Clerical and other duties

  • Ability to answer phone, effectively managing the enquiry
  • Ensure health care records are available with relevant paperwork and results are filed.
  • Observe personal duty of care in relation to stock control and rotation of stock within department.
  • Preparation of booking information for women
  • Enter patient details on PAS and generate wristband
Personal Attributes

  • Manage own workload as appropriate.
  • Ask for, listen to and value the views of women and their families.
  • Ability to deal with frequent exposure to emotional/distressing event
  • Participate in the risk management process, under the direct supervision of the midwife.
  • Maintain a professional working relationship with all members of the multidisciplinary team.
  • The post holder will maintain the confidentiality of the Trust and patient information unless authorised for specific purposes. Report any concerns about the use of such information to the Nurse in Charge.
  • Ability to deal with challenging behaviours
  • Ability to contribute to service development.

TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT

  • Ensure awareness of current issues relevant to clinical area.
  • Personal responsibility to identify and access mandatory training.
