Description

Applications are invited for an enthusiastic and committed graduate Research Assistant to join a vibrant team investigating the host-pathogen cell biology of Rickettsial diseases with a particular focus on Orientia tsutsugamushi, the causative agent of scrub typhus.

This project is based in the group of Dr Jeanne Salje at the Cambridge Institute for Medical Research. It would suit a recent graduate who would like to obtain more practical laboratory experience.

Cambridge Institute for Medical Research is a centre of excellence that has a strong focus on understanding the molecular mechanisms of disease, with the aim of translating basic discoveries to clinically meaningful therapies.

It is known for its positive research culture.

You will carry out a range of research-related activities as directed by the Principal Investigator.

These may include maintaining bacterial stocks and cell lines, cloning, purifying proteins, imaging samples, as well as ordering reagents and managing inventory.

Techniques will include microscopy, cell biology, biochemistry and microbiology. Training will be provided as required.

You must, by the time of the appointment, have a BSc in the field of infectious diseases, immunology, microbiology or molecular cellular biology and have at least 3 months experience in a laboratory setting.

You should ideally be familiar with cell culture techniques, ELISA, molecular cloning, real-time PCR analysis, and immunofluorescent microscopy. Experience working with obligate intracellular bacteria and working in a CL3 laboratory is advantageous but not required.

You will be expected to work within a highly interactive group, to have a friendly and collegiate outlook, to have good written and verbal communications skills, to be well-organised and have the ability to work calmly to meet deadlines.
