£23, pro rata)

20 hours per week, term time only (fixed term for 1 year)


Home-Start North and West Gloucestershire is a charity training and supporting volunteers to provide regular support, friendships and practical help to families under stress, in the own homes and through groups, helping to prevent family crisis and breakdown.

Purposes of the job

  • To help develop, plan and facilitate a programme of perinatal dropin support groups for families across Cheltenham and Tewkesbury
  • To build and maintain strong links with statutory perinatal services, mental health services, the specialist perinatal mental health team, midwives and health visitors in order to maximise referrals to the project.
  • To help support all the groups and to work alongside and support the homevisiting element of Home-Start North and West Gloucestershire.
  • To maintain high standards of practice in supporting families affected by poor perinatal health within the Home-Start model.
  • To ensure equality of opportunity, fairness, and diversity in all aspects of the scheme's work.
  • Implement good safeguarding practice in all areas of work.
  • To contribute to the effective day to day operation of the scheme in accordance with the Home-Start Memorandum & Articles of Association, Home-Start's Standards & Methods of Practice, Home-Start Agreement and Quality Assurance Standards.

Main Responsibilities:


Supporting the work of the scheme

  • Undertaking work as delegated by the scheme manager and the family group facilitator to support the strategic management, development and future funding of our antenatal support.
  • Supporting the implementation and review of all Home-Start policies and procedures.
  • Complying with the scheme's administration, monitoring and financial systems.
  • Promoting the work of the scheme when necessary
  • Contributing to and supporting the development of the Home-Start network locally, regionally, and nationally.

Support for families

  • Receiving family group referrals and assessing needs of families.
  • Introducing families to appropriate support outside of the group setting when necessary.
  • Planning, running, and evaluating twice weekly (termtime only) group dropin sessions and developing our perinatal group support programme.
  • Supporting peer support networks through the dropin groups.
  • Providing training where necessary to potential peer supporters and Home-Start visiting volunteers.
  • To undertake designated responsibilities to safeguard and promote children's welfare.
  • To undertake responsibility for the strict monitoring of all health and safety issues within the group settings, and, to work within the policies of health and safety set down in Home-Start North and West Gloucestershire's group work manual and its Health and Safety policies.

Managing Volunteers

  • Helping to recruit, select and prepare suitable volunteers to support families in the home and within our Mothers-InMind perinatal programme.
  • Contribute as directed to the delivery of the Home-Start preparation course for volunteers. Including helping to provide support, supervision and initial and ongoing training opportunities for volunteers particularly around perinatal support.

Working in Partnership

  • Ensuring appropriate liaison with referrers and other professionals
  • Networking appropriately within the community.
