HEAecology are seeking to recruit Senior Ecologists to join our friendly team based on the Devon/Cornwall border.

We provide ecological and environmental consultancy services including ecological impact assessments, mitigation licencing and much more to an extensive client base nationwide.

You will have a relevant first degree and possibly a post-graduate qualification and be a confident field ecologist.

In addition, you will have proven consultancy experience and an ability to generate new or repeat business based on project management and client care.

Experience in consultancy work related to bats, including licensed bat work, would be highly desirable.


In addition to the right qualifications and experience you will have excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to work effectively on your own and as part of a team.

Senior Ecologist - The Role

  • Undertake ecological surveys for a variety of protected species and habitats, including bats, Barn Owls, reptiles and badgers
  • Report writing for Ecological Impact Assessments (EcIA) including completing desk studies, collating and analysing survey data
  • Professional liaison with clients and colleagues to organise surveys
  • Undertaking Ecological Clerk of Works (ECoW) roles
  • Opportunities to gain experience with us.
  • Flexible working, some requirements for working unsociable hours on a Time Off In Lieu (TOIL) system
  • PC and survey equipment will be provided, including all necessary Personal Protective Equipment

Person Specification

Essential skills/qualifications

  • Relevant professional ecological experience (ideally including at least four years fulltime experience working in ecological consultancy)
  • A broad ecological skillset and, ideally, one or more protected species licences
  • Knowledge and understanding of the planning system and current and evolving wildlife policy and legislation
  • Confidence in written and verbal communication
  • Effective project management and client liaison skills
  • The ability to identify, understand, and resolve ecological issues
  • Happy to work independently, often outdoors, and during unsociable hours.
  • The desire to promote high professional standards in ecology
  • An organised approach to work, flexibility and a high level of motivation
  • A full driving licence and access to your own transport

Desirable skills:


  • Experience of GIS, particularly QGIS.
  • Experience of completing EPS mitigation licenses for bats.
  • Natural England dormouse and/or GCN survey licences.
  • Experience with client relationships.
  • Experience of producing Ecological Impact Assessments (EcIA), Construction Environmental Management Plans (CEMP) and Landscape Ecological Management Plans (LEMP).
