Description

Food department at St Bede's

The food department is thriving and continues to grow, with team members who all consider teamwork to be an essential component of a successful department.

The purpose-built department is situated in the performing arts block, with excellent facilities comprising two fully equipped teaching food rooms.

They each contain nine practical unit areas, with an additional adapted unit in one room for disabled and wheelchair students.

All rooms are installed with a projector and a desktop computer.

We also have a bank of 32 Chromebooks which are used on a regular basis for non-exam assessment (NEA) and coursework at Key Stage 4 (KS4) and Key Stage 5 (KS5), as well as research tasks at Key Stage 3 (KS3).

Food at St Bede's is taught in Year 7 and Year 8 in mixed ability classes of up to 20 students per class and can be chosen as an option in Year 9.

In Year 7, students learn to prepare food in a safe and hygienic manner. Skills and confidence are developed over the half year course with two one-hour lessons per fortnight. Assessment tasks are based around the 'perfect pizza' and 'fresh salad ideas'.

Students in Year 8 further develop their culinary skills, which are linked to 'healthy eating' and the 'eatwell guide', with an assessment project based on pasta.

We also offer a Year 8 elective of three lessons a fortnight for half a term, with the choice of two topics; 'A road trip across the USA' or 'Best of British'.

We have a high uptake of food in Year 9 with three lessons a fortnight for the whole year.

Students continue to develop their practical skills and have the opportunity to display their creativity, with a selection of tasks including developing dishes for a music festival.

The Year 9 course also paves the way to include some of the knowledge required at GCSE level.

At KS4, students study GCSE Food Preparation and Nutrition Eduqas course, where exam board endorsed textbooks and 'My Revision Guide' are used, as well as online resources.

Assessments are set on a regular basis linking to both the written exam and the two NEAs which are completed in Year 11.

The department is successful and this year we achieved 74% 9-4, 30% 9-7 and 13% grade 9 at GCSE.

Extra curricular activities within the department have included an annual Superchef competition for Year 9 students and a lunchtime activity of food presentation skills with Years 7 and 8.

There are also intervention sessions for our KS4 students.
