Doctors Direct have new opportunities for
Clinical Fellowship in Cardiothoracic Anaesthesia and Critical Care at Oxford university Hospitals.


The post-holder will participate in clinical governance activities, including clinical audit, clinical effectiveness, risk management, quality improvement activities as required by the Trust, and external accrediting bodies.


The Clinical Sessions will be agreed with the clinical lead and programme directors and will form the basis of the Fellowship job plan.

The following programme sets out the basic requirements of the fellowship the details to be negotiated and agreed with the post holder prior to commencement of the post.


The post is most suitable for anaesthetists, or physicians wishing to gain further experience in the sub-speciality of cardiothoracic anaesthesia and intensive care, though applicants with more basic level experience in anaesthesia or intensive care medicine will be considered.

Dedicated teaching time will be allocated to developing expertise in:

  • Echocardiography.
  • Anaesthesia for cardiothoracic surgical procedures.
  • Anaesthesia for interventional cardiology procedures.
  • Critical Care.
  • The post holder may have the opportunity to supplement/replace their Cardiothoracic anaesthesia sessions with other specialities, based on their learning objectives and wishes (e.g. regional anaesthesia sessions in NOC).


The Cardiothoracic Critical Care Unit admits patients requiring Level 2 and Level 3 care following cardiothoracic surgery or cardiological procedures, including routine coronary bypass grafts and valves but also complex aortic, mitral, and pulmonary procedures including TAVI and the insertion of ventricular assisted devices.

Additionally, we have a growing thoracic workload including pneumonectomy, lobectomy, lung reduction surgery, endobronchial stent placement and chest re-constructions.

Rates: £50-£70 per hour

  • Valid GMC
  • Right to work in the UK
  • Clinical attachment complete
  • Minimum of 3 months paid experience in the NHS/UK
