We are offering an exciting opportunity for you as an Apprentice to begin your career in the NHS.

The role comes with lots of support and professional development from our friendly team who will help you build a career and take your first steps into People Services within Somerset NHS Foundation Trust.

Youwill form part of an extremely valued Apprentice Team where throughout your placement you will be supported to achieve a Business Admin Level 3 NVQ whilst also getting experience across several People Service areas, including - but not limited to:

  • Workforce Information
  • HR Advisor Team
  • Temporary Staffing Lead Nurse
  • Learning & Development
  • Medical Workforce
College Information


Apprenticeship salary:
£9, 405 per annum for the 1st year forALLapplicants, then age related National Minimum wage thereafter.


Please note:
the apprenticeship salary is currently under review.


This is a fixed term contract for 18 months where you will gain valuable work experience and a level 3 Business Admin apprenticeship.

You will be expected to work from County Hall, Musgrove Park Hospital and Home when required.

Each area will expose you to a wide variety of tasks, including - but not limited to:

  • Compiling reports
  • Intranet amendments
  • Stationary ordering
  • Reward & Recognition administration
  • Completing staff ID checks
  • Data entry
  • Taking meeting notes
  • Generating newsletters
  • Support with the coordination of training and other events
  • Research


You will need to demonstrate strong organisation and timekeeping skills, able to work on your own initiative, take a flexible and adaptable approach to work and are committed to attending college and achieving Apprenticeship qualification.

You will be allocated a college academic mentor for the duration of your programme who will work with both you and your line manager to identify opportunities for growth and development and you will also attend a series of workshops to support knowledge development in business administration.


You will be required to work flexibly across the Service and are expected to maintain the Trusts values and lead by example.

You can expect constant contact with People Service Colleagues and regular contact with colleagues across the wider organisation.


Tasks and responsibilities as follows:

Workforce Information Support Tasks:


  • Run reports which require data manipulation and the use of business intel systems.
  • Use of our Electronic Staff Record system (ESR) to complete equality and diversity checks.
  • Support of the yearly flu clinics by inputting relevant information onto ESR.
  • Preparation of manager's electronic workbooks.

HR Advisor Support Tasks:


  • Sickness audits run reports from our Electronic Staff Record (ESR) system for staff sickness. Check data against personal files, feedback to Managers where improvements can to be made.
  • Enter case information onto the ER Tracker system.
  • Responsible for updating the People Services Intranet page.
  • Calculate annual leave entitlements.
  • Using the ESR system to obtain data needed to process employment confirmation requests.
  • Review redeployment cases against NHS jobs for suitable roles.
  • Review the pay protection report against NHS jobs. Highlighting any individuals that could potentially be moved to utilise pay protection.

Temporary Staffing Lead Nurse Support Tasks:

  • Using the Bank Staff and E-rostering system's to enter all Bank members of staff training and shadow shifts.
  • Book and obtain confirmation of training attendance for all newly appointed Bank members of staff.
  • Bulk ordering and receipting of uniform.
  • Ensure new Bank members of staff are set up and have been issued with EOL logins.

Learning & Development Support Tasks:


  • Register entry onto ESR
  • Fit test
