Job: Senior Ecologist (Oxford)

Location: Oxford (hybrid working)

Salary: Negotiable (Starting at £35,000 per annum)

We are seeking a skilled Senior Ecologist to join our team at Ecology by Design.

This role involves conducting Preliminary Ecological Appraisals (habitat surveys and condition assessments), Biodiversity Impact Assessments, protected and priority species surveys, preparing quotations and tenders, Ecological Impact Assessment, and further detailed assessments. The ideal candidate will have the autonomy to deliver projects from quoting to invoicing in a supportive environment.

Project-based work means that the successful candidate must be willing to undertake travel and work away from home with occasional overnight stays. However, we prioritize work-life balance, ensuring that team members achieve a healthy balance between work and personal life.

We work across the UK, primarily in the Home Counties, South, and Midlands regions.

Key Skills and Experience

We require:

• Genuine enthusiasm for ecology and the environment;
• Experience of phase 1 habitat surveys/UK Habs and protected species surveys;
• Survey license for at least one protected species (e.g., bats, dormouse, GCN, barn owl, rare reptiles etc.);
• Ability to lead field teams and manage projects;
• Flexibility to adapt to the needs of a growing business;
• Excellent report writing skills;
• Motivation to work independently and as part of a team, often in remote locations and sometimes during unsociable hours;
• Good communication skills with colleagues, clients, and third parties;
• Experience of writing or securing European Protected Species Mitigation licenses (EPSM) for at least one protected species;
• Comfortable designing surveys and quoting for work;
• Full driving license and use of a car.

Desirable Skills:

• Advanced skills in one or more specialist ecological areas (e.g., bats, dormouse, GCN, barn owl, rare reptiles etc.);
• Member of CIEEM (or eligible if not currently held);
• Degree or equivalent in an ecology-related discipline;
• Experience of using QGIS or ArcGIS;
• Experience of line managing and mentoring junior members of staff;
• Comfortable generating new work and networking; and
• Secured European Protected Species Mitigation (EPSM) licenses for protected species (e.g., great crested newt or bats).
